For the record my 350D has been 'clean' since I got it and I have only ever used the Giotto blower a few times but I do have a Copperhill Sensor Brush if needed:)

My 40D has a clean sensor but is being exchanged because of slight FFing.

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

I don't find your post funny at all. In fact, if there is an "ignore feature" on this forum, I'm going to add you to it.

I don't know if you are the sort who enjoys being rude and takes pleasure in other people's grief, but if you are, I'd rather not communicate with you.

My 350D, that I picked up in Sept. '05 was spotless from the factory. I do believe I have a legitimate issue having received two new 40D bodies with senors that were covered with debris right out of the box.

I'll refrain from any explitives that could get me kicked off this forum.

I'll end my redress to you by saying that your post was not that of a gentleman.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!! "two new 40D bodies with senors that were covered with debris right out of the box." I love this part! I can't comment on your first 40D, but the pictures from the second body shows your sensor was NOT "covered with bebris"! LOL!!!!

I thought the cartoon was VERY funny! (Or is it you, that it funny!) LOL!

Thanks for making me laugh, first ting in the morning!!! LOL!!!

"I'll end my redress to you by saying that your post was not that of a gentleman." Forgot this one!! LOL!!!!

No offence meant here, but..... Your seriously going to make 6 hour round trip for this?? [2hrs there, 2hrs wait & 2hrs back]

So how much is that gonna cost you for your 'free' sensor clean?

I understand your annoyed that it should come with any dust in it at all, but seriously....

Not trying to offend, hope you don't take it that way - just find it hard to believe someone would waste near a day of their time, and a tank of fuel for so little dust!

No offense taken. I see your point, I hope you see mine.

I really would love to have a 40D that is right in all respects. I've got some spare time next week and will make the trip.

I don't think that it is a small amount of dirt, however, given my previous experience with Canon DSLRs. I'm going to try to to be well over 6000 clicks before I make the trip. If that isn't enough to get the bulk of the excess lube and debris from the interals and start a good wear-in, then I don't know what is. It took me over a year to get that many clicks in my 350D, and as I have stated, that camera wasn't cleaned until it was considerably older than my 2nd 40D.

I suppose I had higher expectations from Canon. On this note, a full Pro Photog friend of mine picked up a 1D MKIII and its sensor was covered with debris out of the box. He doesn't care, because he has a team of people that do his post work to correct the problems.

I can see how on one side some folks might think I'm making a big deal out of nothing, but for the record, the largest camera shop in San Diego's Rep that I trust has stated that none of the 40Ds they have sold were as dirty as my two have been out of the box, at least not dirty enough to be an issue, though they charge $50 to clean a sensor, so I would say that it's possible that some customers are willing to look the other way. I can get to Irvine and back for much less than $50 in gas and I've got the time.

Honestly, at this point, I'm more concerned about having another jam-tastic ER99-ing body than the dirt on the sensor. One way or another the dirt will go away.

Once again, no offense taken, nothing like the puppet's sophmoric comic.

Best,

Michael

No, he doesn't care because he knows he can clean it in under 5 minutes.

BTW, you missed a good point from that funny cartoon. You might just end up with a sensor with more blobs on it after cleaning than before.

Really?

You hide it well, Michael...

This really is a complete non-issue, y'know.

It has already been explained to you that what you're seeing is the Status Quo and not, in any way, a failing on Canon's part (I've had sensors with stuff on 'em in brand new Nikons too).

In much less than the time you've spent obsessing about it on here, you could have wet-cleaned your sensor 100 times over and found something important to worry about instead.

Sorry about your dust.

On a side note: Unless Canon packaged the camera in a Clean Room using something other than a cardboard box it is a guarantee that there will be dust on and in the products they make and ship.

The cost to do this would price their products out of the market. Customer complaints and free cleanings FAR outweigh the loss of sales costs.

again...sorry about your dust.

I don't believe a brand new camera should be this dirty out of the box. When I had the same issue, before I got the ER99s, I called Canon USA and they said "no way... that shouldn't happen"

He she is, right out of the box, brand-spank'n-new 40D:

Yeah, who uses f/32 that often? Well, I don't, but on a tripod for still life, I use f/22 quite often.

Seriously, what do you all think? Is this acceptable right out of the box?

I don't think this bodes well for Canon, or the upcomming air show I was planning on shooting with the 40D. :(

Michael

That's pretty darn clean for right out of the box at f16 and f22! Just use a rocketblower and you may end up with a totally clean sensor! :)

This is what I have a problem with. The sensor/filter should not be so soft that wiping a piece of dust across it destroys it. If there isn't a method of cleaning available that does not void my warranty, then Canon should provide free cleaning for life and they should pickup the shipping costs and have a turnaround time of 1 day.

I'm sure you know that many/most products will have its warranty void if you open it up and try to make your own repairs, etc. It's just good business practice. Why should a company fix a produt that the user messed up by trying to fix themself? You wouldn't fix it for free if a product you sold was messed up by a buyer, would you?

No, in fact he doesn't ever clean his own sensors. He pays to have them cleaned. In his case, regarding his 1D MKIII, Canon in Irvine is going to clean it for him as soon as he has the time to get it up there.

I don't obsess about insignificant dust, I'm was simply disappointed to see as much as I did right out of the box, that was my whole point.

If rank and file customers expect poor Q/C from Canon, Canon will surely give it to them. I expected better, that's all.

Actually, I have been out enjoying taking pictures. I've decided to forget about the damn dust and give this baby a workout. I believe I stated that.

By the way, since you put it that way, "insignificant" -what do you clean your sensor with?

I would appreciate your input, perhaps it could be of help to me and our other fellow forum members?

Best,

Michael

I saw the documentary, "War Photographer" the other night. It's mainly about James Nacthwey. It was shot in and around 2000, so he was shooting film with a couple Canon 1 Series. I know that he now shoots Canon digital and wonder if he feels the same way about dust on the sensor as "M24." Especially when in the thick of things.

It's a awesome documentary and I highly recommend it. I would say that we should be glad to have room in our lives to have the time to worry about dust on sensors.

Acceptable or not... It is what it is.

Just clean it or have it cleaned, and move on...

Simple.

John

RedHot,

I stated that my rocket blower wouldn't budge any of the specs. WTH, it is what it is, I can't change the past. And until I'm very confident in cleaning my own sensors, I'm not going to void the warranty on a $1300 piece of gear. Since I'll have the spare time next week, I feel it will be well-worth the trip to Irvine.

Who knows, perhaps I might learn a thing or two from the folks at Canon that could help out our fellow forum members? One day trip could turn out to be invaluable later.

At the end of the day, isn't that what we are here for? I'm here to learn, share, both creativity and solutions, and given the opportunity, try to help out someone else.

I don't know about you, but I remember some 25 years ago, when I started shooting film in a Canon SLR, I sure would have appreciated a forum like this, even if I had to get talked down to a bit, by some pro who doesn't care for newbies.

Best,

Michael
