Have you tried fiddling with your B/W conversion technique? Using different channels can often yield radically different results, as can using "digital filters". I see you have editing allowed; if you post a color version it might be fun to see what people come up with.

I blended the G and B channels to make the red shirt stand out against the rocks a little more and fiddled with the levels and contrast some.
