Will be picking up my MKIII tonite and for an additional $500 CDN it adds 2 more years to the standard 1 year from Canon making 3 in total

I normally avoid these programs like the plague on consumer goods, but for a pro camera, maybe i should purchase it?

Thoughts

Depends on the terms of the extended warranty. I got one which lets me have a replacement camera while mine is being repaired, and that I consider really useful.

My plan does not, it has lemon protection, in for the same repair 2X the third time for the same thing a new body. Repair time is nothing special same as everyone else including consumer cameras, unless you are CPS where you must prove that 100% of your income is photography based and then you get special treatment.

hopefully this isn't too far off topic, but I feel it is an absolute must to pick up a seperate insurance policy on your gear, I put everything including my memory cards and camera bag, even my laptop on a seperate policy I think they called it a "rider" here in the states, to my homeowners insurance...I think I pay $200 a year, but that covers theft, breakage, the works...it's a small price to pay if your gear gets stolen or dropped, etc...

My credit card issuer provides a warranty that doubles the original manufacturer's warranty at no charge when you purchase with the card.

My Visa extends it for another 12 months giving me 2 years total, so perhaps this is the cost effective method, if anything is to go wrong with it I would suspect the first 12 months anyway.

Agree or Disagree?

Do Mack Warranties work in Canada? If so, they are a lot less expensive for this model, I think mine was only $175. for an extra 3 years. Plus I have always heard good things about the Mack Warranty.

moorel, funny thing just before typing this, I just called my insurer and will get this in case its stolen, robbed or even dropped and damaged. The $500 I was going to spend on extended warranty certainly covers this for many years!

I just use Visa and get 2 years warranty but seldom keep a camera body more than 2 years, I guess the 5D is just about an exception now...

NEVER hesitate to get insurance. Mine cost me $83/year for $6000 in equipment. I listed EVERYTHING. It more than paid itself off very quickly when my daughter knocked my camera bag in the lake with my 30D, 28-105, XT, 100-300 L, and a bunch of misc crap. Less than a week after it happened, I had it all settled and a new camera in my hands.

Just make sure you keep your policy up to date. I hadn't updated and my 100-300 L wasn't on my policy, and was out of the 'new purchase' window... So I was SOL on that.
