I currently have a 10d which I am very pleased with, but I have come across a 1d which is going cheap ( at the moment) my question is how much better is the 1d over the 10d and what sort of price should I go up to ??

many thanks rick

The 1D is faster in every way. It has fewer pixels. It's heavier. Battery life isn't quite as good. Batteries are more expensive. The LCD doesn't zoom for checking focus. It's worse at higher ISO.

It's better in some ways, not in others. I had one and loved it BUT I used it as an intro to the 1 series and as soon as I could afford to, I upgraded to the 1D Mark II...since the Mark II gave me back most of the IQ and pixels I had lost by selling the 30D.

I wouldn't want a Mark I to be my only camera unless I could stay at or below ISO400, frame perfectly, and never had to print bigger than 11x14.

The 1D and the 10D are not totally time-compatible-- the 10D came out 2 years after the 1D, which explains the differences. The 1D mark II came out a year after the 10D (around the time of the 20D) , approximately, then the mark II N came out around the release of the 30D.

1D series cameras are great, I've never used a 1D mk I, but I can't imagine that the 10D could be much better except maybe for the pixels and a little for the ISO.

I would get a 1D Mark I any day over a 10D... While that is just me, many pro photographers like it because it shoots REALLY fast, it's very sturdy (weatherproofing), and most of all... FULL FRAME. 1.6x crop on the Prosumer SLRs is really a pain if you like street shooting and indoors like me...

Now if you do more, say, wildlife, and need something that's more tote-able and don't need the full frame, save your money. Yes, it's only like 4MP... But really, unless you're doing poster prints or something, it doesn't matter; the pictures still come out great. Just keep your 10D for hi res pictures when needed.

I have a 20d and recently added a 1D to my arsenal. Everyone always hates on the 1D i'll tell you this when it came out in 2001 it was the industry's best. If you compare it with newer bodies if course it's not going to keep up (DUH! its the newest advancements!!!!).

Alot of people who complain about it are either pixel peepers, and only see their stuff on the computer not in print, never used one, or just plain human error.

I'll admit the noise is there at 800 iso not noise free but get enough light and expose correctly with this baby and the images still kick butt. Once you get your hands on a 1-series body everything else will seem like a toy. Of course once you get it you will have to get used to it and it will take a while before you can get exactly what you want from that camera.

One thing i liked about the 1D is the Super fast AF! i use it for boxing...works like a charam in well lit arenas..a

It's time to realize that gear isnt going to make our images. They Help! ALOT but ultimately it wont make them.

It's not full frame.

I think I'm the only one in this thread so far with experience using BOTH the 10D AND the 1D Mark I.

The 1D is great but it's only advantage over the 10D is speed and build. If those features aren't needed, then the 10D is a better choice, in my opinion. Look at my gear list. I think that says a lot. If you're unhappy with the 10D's speed, then sure go for the 1D. But don't expect IQ to blow you away...it won't.

If you can afford it, get it. It's another tool. It will have it's uses.

For sport you should grab the 1d over the 10d. I have 1dmkII and I have a 10d as backup. I would swap my 10d for a 1d any day of the week. If your not needing the speed, weatherproofing or sturdiness then keep the 10d :)

I agree with this. Get it if you can buy it outright, but don't sell your 10D for it. Unless of course you never shoot higher ISO and/or print large. Those are the advantages to the 10D over the 1D.

Let's put it this way: A 1D is to a 10D what the Ferrari is to the Ford Mustang in terms of sports cars.
