Hi,

I have just got myself a 30D (Already own 10D) and as I'm generally not into reading manuals with great attention (I know, I know).

When I adjust the Picture Style settings on the 30D - Do these setting only apply to pictures taken in the Basic Zone? Or do they apply equally to pictures taken in the Creative Zone?

Any advice greatly apreciated.

Michael

You can't adjust the picture styles in the Basic Zone (green box, icons). Adjustments can only be made in—and only apply to—the Creative Zone (P, Tv, Av, M, and A-Dep).

How then does the camera judge when you are taking a portrait picture for example?: "PORTRAIT: For nice skin tones. The image looks slightly sharp and crisp. By changing the Colour Tone (p. 57) you can adjust the skin tone"

I don't understand the question. The camera doesn't judge anything. In the Creative Zone modes (P, Tv, Av, M, and A-Dep), you select the picture style that you want to use. You can also adjust the picture style.

In the Basic Zone modes, when you put the camera in Portrait mode (the icon of a head) the camera uses the Portrait picture style. In Landscape mode (the icon of mountains) it uses Landscape picture style. In the other Basic Zone modes it uses the Standard picture style. You can't adjust the picture style in the Basic Zone modes.

Then it seems that what I was asking to begin with might be the case - that if you go to "Picture Style" using the menu, a selection of settings comes up: Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral and Faithful - the setting like Contrast, saturation etc can be manually set to your preference.

My original question was "Are these settings, once altered, only used in the Basic Zone, and it seems to me that the answer must be "Yes".

I'm sorry if I didn't explain my question well to begin with.

I think that you are confused about what the Basic Zone is. That's why I was very careful to describe it.

The Basic Zone is the fully automated zone: the green box "full auto" mode and the modes with icons on the dial. See the picture on page 18 of the 30D manual.

In the Basic Zone, you cannot alter the picture styles. You get the factory original style that is tied to the mode that you chose.

Sorry to be a pain and perhaps I'm being a bit thick - you can't alter the basic zone presets I fully get that, but what then are the "Picture Style" adjustments (Contrast, Saturation etc) to the Portrait, Standad, Landscape styles that you can make using the Menu?

Basic Zone modes (Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, etc) are settings automatically applied to camera BEFORE the shot is taken.
Picture Styles are automatic settings applied to the image AFTER the shot was taken.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Dear OP:

You have to understand that there are some complexities.

There are automatic modes, which Canon doesn't allow us to mess with. These include Auto, Portrait, and all the others in the bunch of settings thereof, and are automatically saved as jpegs.

In the "Creative Zone" you are given more control. If you save as a RAW, you have total control as far as things such as relative contrast and saturation. However, the Picture Style settings give you a "starting point" with such things.

You can, if you wish, go to a Picture Style in a given setting to set a particular suggestion of rendition. However, If you shoot in RAW, this suggested rendition will likely only "work" in Canon's DPP software. If you use a third party software it probably will only render your image in its own "suggested" rendering.

I may be wrong, because I am neither a Canon expert or an image science expert, but that's my best guess!

Hi to all who replied.

The penny suddenly dropped with me. I understood the Basic and Creatives zones OK but what I was allowing to confuse me was the parameters which can be set for pictures styles.

I finally twigged last night that these are set and used at the time of shooting by the photographer - previously I had been thinking that once set, I didn't need to touch those controls again (Not even to select the type of picture) and that the settings I had set in the parameters would automatically come into play depending on the type of shot I was a bout to take.

How thick can one person be? I suppose the main thing is that I got there in the end :D Thanks for all your efforts guys!
