My new 40D seems to enjoy surprising me by in the first instance last Friday deciding to chose only to work in Live View and refusing to switch back to the viewfinder and normal use - this cleared by the removal and replacement of the battery.

Cleared settings and then yesterday during a booked shoot of children it decided to lock up the mirror and refuse to do anything for about 20 seconds. This refused to clear by battery removal and eventually i managed to clear all settings and it behaved its self for a while, but repeated it later. Surprisingly the camera worked perfectly in the "idiot" modes" but as soon as I tried any of the "creative" modes - up went the mirror - flash went but no image recorded.

Over the weekend i emailed canon who said they would reply in two days - it took four asking for more information but gave an "incident" number to quote on the phone help line. Today contacted them to be given a reference number saying contact the dealer for a replacement. This is one time I am glad I purchased from a local Canon Specialist in Norfolk who will make the exchange and not with a postal strike on from a supplier via the net.

I look forward to getting the replacement as when it works it seems a super tool and producing excellent results - at least the mother yesterday was over the moon with the results I managed with cooperative children.

Canon 600D, 40D, 350D + 50mm 1.8, Sigma 18-200is, 70-200 2.8DG and 70-300. Still have A1 and 300 EOS and must get out my Rollei TLR sometime

Which lens were you using?

It's unlikely I guess, but it isn't unknown for older Sigma lenses to cause strange problems with new Canon bodies.

Have you checked with Sigma that the lenses you've got are 100% compatible with the 40D? If they're older lenses, maybe they need re-chipping...

Bah, the 40D hasn't ben thooughly completed. I've had mine for less than two weeks and all the pictures are blurry. I side by side tested it with my 1DMKIIn and the pictures are night and day.

Now this only happens in one shot mode, when in AI servo and tracking a moving object it is perfect.

.

I was using my Sigma 18-200 designed for DSLR's the first time and a Canon 1.8 on another occasion. The amazing this is that it works perfectly for a while before playing up - and then the last time carried on working in the "idiot" modes so was able to continue using "Portrait". The last couple of days - been trying various settings and has behaved its self - must know it is going back!
