I can't seem to remove these artifacts (if that's indeed what they are) in the sky and mountain without distroying details in the water. This is crop from a RAW shot using a 20D processed in C1 saved as a TIF with on sharpening, cropped using CS2 and saved again in TIF. They aren't boxey like compression artifacts so what are those little squiggle lines and how do I get rid of them? If anyone wants to try their hand at getting ride the artifacts while saving the details in the water and leaves please give it a try.

The lines on the land are noise mixed with oof detail,

two very quick versions, one is just the clone tool, other is magic wand + gaussian blur.

sharpening a bit less would help. :)

<edit> 2nd one is the blur one, just noticed how terrible it looks, so ignore that :D

Many thanks to all of you..they are all improvements over my original.

If I had to pick just one I would go with bckane's after version. Would explain the steps you used to get your results?

Thanks again.

What is off detail? And how is it created?

Glad you liked the after version, steps I took were
1....Selected the sky and mountions with the Quick Selection tool in CS3.
2....Then used reduce noise (strength 10%) Remove JPEG Artifact
3.....About 75% USM
I think thats about it....pretty easy touchup to remove noise
Brian....

I don't use CS2 very often... I can select the sky+ground then copy it into a new layer then reduce noise but what is the Quick Select tool..than sound faster and simpler.
