Due to the shorter register distance than Canon, this MD adapter needs corrective optics, which are very poor quality and reduce quality significantly, which in my opinion takes away some of the attractiveness of MF glass.

There are a lot of very fine m42 offerings out there. Pentax, Zeiss as well as russian clones of Zeiss designs (e.g. Jupiter-9 85mm f2, Jupiter 37 which is a Sonnar 135 3.5, helios 44 is a zeiss biotar ....).

Some M42 lenses have an aperture pin, you set the aperture to the value you want, on a camera like pentax spotmatic, there is a lever that pushes it before the shutter is released or when pressing the DOF button, that way one can focus wide open.
Modern SLRs don't have that lever anymore(it is all electrical now).
For the benefit of those lenses you would want to get an M42->EOS adapter that has an "Aperture Flange" (look for that in the description).
Basically, it is an inner ring at the end of the screw that presses that aperture pin, without it, there is nothing that presses that screw so the aperture diaphragm stays open no matter what.

btw, if you are looking for a cheap, fast 35mm lens, try the MIR 24 35mm f2.
It is usually offered for the Nikon mount (you can get a Nikon->EOS adapter as well), but I was able to find it for the M42 mount. It is still in shipping so I didn't test it yet. One very nice thing about it is that it can focus as close as 20cm!

I started to add M42 lenses to my setup because I also use them in my old film camera.
As others have mentioned, the Jupiter-9 85mm f2 is a very good portrait lens.

The Sigma 30 1.4 is a fantastic lens and I am not replacing it any time soon (though I wish it had a shorter minimal focus distance).
