Action Shots???...TV mode???

I set the 40D in the basic/sports mode ...the images seem ok and this setting seems to follow any movement with clarity.

I then seet the camera to creative zone/tv mode, one shot/high speed drive...the moving objects are all sharp but the overall exposure seems to be a little darker.
What am I doing wrong?...shouldn't the exposure match the ones in the sports mode?

I'm new to this camera {1 week old} and I've never used the tv mode ,as I do mostly landscapes and portraits.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks ,
mike

Compare the exif data for yourself between shots of different settings. You should see what changes and what doesn't.

When I shoot sports this is what works for me...

AV mode @ lowest fstop ( 2.8 )
Depending on how much light is out I use ISO 100-400 (higher if needed)
AI servo focus w/center AF point
Burst shot <--- forget the technical term

So basically I keep my aperture the same, and get the shutter speed I want by playing with ISO.

If I notice players are in something dark and it's very bright out and everyone is getting underexposed I'll play with exposure compensation and set it +1 or so.

Hope this help, -Adam
Just did it this way this morning with these shots -> http://atphotography.smugmug.com/gallery/3600263#204739942 (external link)

one shot/high speed drive..

Well, this hasn't anything to do with exposure - but you don't want to be (in general) in one-shot mode for any kind of sports - get it into one of the servo AF modes.

Thank you, that I was. Here are a few other examples I posted up here a while ago of college football all done the same way as well. Best of luck, hopefully you get the hang of it.

You may have to experiment with metering modes also.

My home team wears reflective black and white uniforms which drive a spot meter crazy.

And Emberghost has given you very good advice:D

My guess is you metering is different. What were you shooting in the Tv mode? I am not sure what the sports mode uses, but I ussually center weighted, when shooting Av, mode (don't use Tv much). I am findning, that for sports however, Manual works really good, as long as the lighting is constant, otherwise your exposure will srew up, if one shot is metered on a white jersey and the next on someone's face.

When I shoot manual, I put the camera's spot meter on and keep focussing inthe players face with a half-shutter, this will tell you on the exposure guage, if you are metered correctly.

A lot depends on whether you are talking day or night. During bright daylight I will go ISO 400, Av, f/4, evaluative, AI servo, and continuous. Once twilight hits I start to up the ISO and keep an eye on shutter speed, keeping it at 1/400 or better. Once the lights are the primary light source, I switch to ISO 'H' (3200), Tv mode, 1/320 or 1/250, center weighted metering. I prefer to get an underexposed shot than a motion blurred shot. I find that often f/2.8 is good enough most of the time to expose within a stop.
