They say the first step is to admit you have a problem. On to step 2 of 12. :D

i doubt that commission is the reason for that. most business would try to sell the way more expensive items rather than the brand new cheaper models that are flying off the shelf anyway. if anything, the commission on the 5D should be higher because they have an incentive to clear inventory before a new model is released.

I'm not so sure. Have worked in retail for years, commission is based on several things.

1. Manufacturer incentives.
2. Retailer inventory.
etc....

With a sales person it always comes down to his/her commission. If they don't care about that they are not very good at their job.

Some sales people are smart and develop relationships with their clients, understanding that while each sale may not yeild the highest commission the number of sales they will make to this person over time will yeild them high commission. That is a smart sales person.

However, in my experience there are few smart sales people. But as said above, I am a pessimist. :D

What is the big difference other than the Exterior Body?

The 40D has 3200 ISO the XTi does not. 40D has Spot metering the XTi does not. i dont know what else other then live view, AF-on button, 3" LCD and probably a few other things im forgetting.

Never rely on sales personnel to educate you on the pros and cons of a product, and what you should buy. The well-intentioned ones are rare, the well-informed ones are even more rare, and if you get one who is both well-intentioned and well-informed you've hit the jackpot of sales personnel. If you know what you want to buy and why you want to buy it before you get to the store, you're ahead of the game.

Well first of let me start by saying I AM the wolf sales associate you are sometimes talking to. After working for wolf I must say i'm surprised it still exists with the way it operates. For the most part I hate my company lol... but when I first started I was filled with the excitement of getting to sell and play with all the newest accessories and such. Just as some of you complain about salesmen who know little, I complain about people who think they know so much. People come in talking like they just read an internet review, and sometimes they had. they have no clue what it really means but only that X value High or low is what your looking for. Of course I also live in a part of town where people throw around money like nothing, but thats another story.
If I was you I wouldn't trust sales associates on everything because there are SI's that base what we sell. Me personally I don't make enough to sell a piece of junk Sony alpha SLR (20 dollar SI last year) to a customer the. SI isn't worth it. I try to find cameras I believe in because Id rather sell something I know inst coming back and I wont have to listen to a customer complain about the equipment I sold them, than make 20 bucks and listen to garbage. A good sales men will ask what you need and what you do. Then from that he will make suggestions, but he wont over sell. If he starts to talk about a camera like its the only thing in life you need to purchase...RUN!!!

It seems like there are a few diverse things getting tossed around here and mixed up in the process. We are talking about three/four different classes of camera here: the xxx series, the xx series, and the x series (and then the 1xxx... series).

Each class offers a significant leap in quality, hence a significant leap in price. Anyone who compared an XTi with a 40D (or a 40D with a 5D or a 5D with a 1 series) and says there's no real difference is, well, either ignorant, in denial, or has some kind of agenda. Whether you can afford the higher-priced class of camera is, of course, an entirely different and valid question.

For the salesman who suggests a lower-priced class of camera, well, that is a bit confusing unless a customer asked a question along the lines of "what will give me the best value, bang-for-buck, quality for price?" -- these are valid questions that consumers ask all the time but many or most established professionals won't because the pros know what they are looking for. The consumers are less inexperienced and knowledgeble. A good salesman will probably pick up on the difference.

But a salesman who with no input from the customer immediately assumes "less expensive is the way to go", well, his/her opinion is costing his company profit, and in reality that is more important to his job than commision is, and, as well, he may be doing the customer a real disservice.

I own a 30D, I bought my daughter an XTi as a starter DSL, and I would not hesitate in saying that I wouldn't trade the two for the price difference. Not to mention the added features and FPS of the 40D. I also own a 5D and I wouldn't trade down to a 30D or a 40D because the 5D has a higher class of features, including the FF sensor.

It's like, why buy that 70-200 f/2.8L lense when you can have a 70-300 f/4-5.6 zoom lens for so, so much less? Well, of course, if price is the biggest factor, don't even ask. But if quality is the biggest factor (including the ability to get good shots in low light) then you don't need to ask, right?

If you want a great camera for weddings and a back up the 5D and 30D compliment each other perfectly. To go from a 30D to 40D or XTi is difficult in my opinion.

I tried it once on a project, I had got used to my 30D controls, when skipping back to the 350D briefly, I got lost for a bit, and thats no way to deal with any paid shoot.

However, the 5D and 30D controls and size are almost identical, its a breeze shooting with both. You would also have the best of both worlds. The 40D looks like a great camera, but I do wish they had left the controls in the same place as the 30D.

Just my opinion

No.. I did post a few from a wedding seminar but non from any jobs.. (I dont feel it would be wise to do so unless i get permission from the couple.) Usually after I shoot a wedding I usually file the pics away in a HD that is in my closet in the safe... Not available on my pc... unless needed by customer...
