I have the firmware upgrade extracted. From reading the instructions, I need to take out my CF card and format it? I do not have a card reader so does that mean I cannot upgrade the firmware?

That is basically my problem.

i would assume that you can just plug in your camera like you normally do and then drag the file onto the CF drive/folder.

here is your answer from Canon website:

Q: How do I copy the downloaded firmware file to the CF card?
A: Two methods of copying the downloaded firmware file are provided.

1. If you have a CF card reader, please copy the firmware file to the CF card via a CF card reader.

2. Please connect the camera and a personal computer with a USB cable, and copy the firmware file onto the CF card in the camera. Please use EOS Utility application bundled with the camera to copy the file. (Please use CF card of 64MB or more, 2GB or less, for this case.)

i would do that. that particular software also allows you to do remote shooting with your camera so you never know when it will be useful...
