Vertex 100, 200, 300 and cabin baggage restrictions?

I'm looking to get a new camera bag, something larger than my Slingshot 200 and also able to take a laptop as well. I've pretty much settled on one of the Lowepro Vertex bags but I'm concerned about cabin baggage restrictions.

As far as dimensions go, they are all 1cm too deep (for the UK) but so long as they can be squashed down that should be OK. As far as I can tell, even the 300 should actually pass most restrictions that I've seen on websites. But I have seen another post where someone said there would be no chance with the 300. I think that was speculation rather than hard fact but wonder what others have experienced.

The other aspect to the restrictions is the weight. I'm flying with Air New Zealand in a few weeks and they say they have a 7Kg weight restriction on cabin baggage. My understanding is that the Vertex 300 weighs nearly 4Kg on its own and a smallish laptop would add another 2Kg. So that leaves a paltry 1Kg for photographic gear. That being the case I might as well get the Vertex 100 since I couldn't make worthwhile any use of the space available in the 200 and 300.

I've never been asked to weigh my cabin baggage before but I wonder whether Air New Zealand always weigh it, or weigh it if the bag looks large/heavy. I'd be grateful for any feedback.

Thanks :)

Take the 100 or 200 if you dont need more.
Then whenh you check it..
Take a jacket with inside pockets.
Put couple of lenses there:lol:
Problem solved.

I tested the 100 but for a laptop i find it too small.
Still I took the bag because of the size and weigh.
NOt the biggest bag but no problems neither.
I add reflectors etc to the comp depeartement.

PS: I will post some review on this later this week vertex 100

Good point on loading up jacket pockets :) I think the Vertex 200 is probably the best choice all round.

The vertex 200 is the way to go. I wanted a bigger bag but the 300AW you will have issues trying to get it carried on. In other words, you better be in a huge plane, otherwise, they will have it checked in.

The 200AW so far has not been an issue, hence, myself going with the 200AW.

It's also good to note that the 200AW doesn't have the tuck away waist strap like the 300AW has.

There is a thread here somewhere where we were de-mystifying that portion. I thought it was hidden on my 200Aw, although they are supposed to be different in size, the 200AW does lack the tuck away waist strap which was a downer. But heck, I can carry it on board.

I decided against the Vertex in the end and instead plumped for the ThinkTank Airport Acceleration. My reasons for the choice and a bit of a review are here....
