Dear members,

I just came back from another shoot and only just noticed that all my files are numbered in a weird way.

I have file numbering in the menu set to continous, and that always was the case...never changed that!

There's nobody else but me using the camera, so that somebody else changed the settings is not an option.

After my last shoot I was close to 9700...now the counter somehow started at zero again

NOW what's REALLY WEIRD!!!!

It seems that file numbering comes down to what CF card I use!
I formatted my card (Sandisk extreme) before the shoot, files started at ZERO. But I always format the cf's in camera, and it doesn't happen all the time.

With another card of mine, the counter says 6730 and also continues from there.

I don't really care what number it says to be honest, but I get difficulties with storing the files as I often encounter having shots with the same number.

How can that be? :(

The file counter only goes up to 9999 before it has to wrap around back to 0 again since there is only space for 4 digits in the file name. There's nothing wrong with your camera nor is there anything weird going on. That's just how it works.

As for the issues of having duplicate file names, you can easily fix that by putting the pictures from different sessions in different folders with very descriptive names so that you'll know what pictures are in the folder just by looking at the folder name. That'll eliminate your duplicated file name issues unless you habitually shoot more than 9999 pictures in a single session. :)

Ahh okay thanks for your reply. Guess I didn't notice that I went past 9999 already last time then.

What still confuses me is the issue with different CFs, but guess that's just it.

Thanks!

that's actually the beauty of the mkiii. if you have photos from another camera on the card, it will set it's numbering to that of the card. when you insert a clean card, it'll restart from where it last left off.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

actually, that's the beauty/ugliness of all non-1DIII (all 1D?) cameras

however, the mark iii does not follow other cf card numbering but rather its own numbering even if pictures from another camera with different numbers are on it

at least that's what happens in my experience swapping cards from my XTi to my mark III.
