With noise reduction on the longest I get burst wise is 9 images before it slows, with it off I went as high as 61 and just decided to stop because it could have kept going.

JPEG or RAW? Remember also that Noise Reduction essentially takes a second, blank, exposure to establish the noise levels of your sensor. If you're shooting bursts, it needs to work with the raw sensor data, so it's saving more information in the buffer.

I was shooting jpeg. I figured that just wanted to see if others were getting the same number. My CF card is x133

I thought noise reduction was only for long exposures, having no effect on bursts due to faster shutter speeds being used & NR not being applied. Did they change that with the 40D?

Oh ok thanks for that information. Needless to say I don't own the 40D so I had no idea.

AthleticsPhotog, I get about the same number as you do with ISO Noise Reduction on. I guess, as Jon says, it just takes longer to complete the noise reduction process immediately after your shot. Makes sense, then, that this feature is turned off by default on the 40D so you can enjoy the full 6.5fps for a good 60-odd images :)

You see some help using it, but to be honest a program on your cpu is always going to be better then your camera at reducing noise.

It's not so much better or worse as different. It's able to work with the original Bayer-masked pixels, so should theoretically do better.

BTW, although it's billed as "long exposure", the NR on the 5D appears to kick in at around 1/30 sec. Some tests I did showed a noise" bump at 1/60.

I thought so. The question is,why is it really there. I mean, 40D is not marketed to complete newbies. It's more for pro/semi-pro photographers. Why would I use this feature over Noise Ninja or similar Noise reduction software??

agreed dmitrim... i dont see much difference in the shot and if its that bad then your going to take it to NNinja anyways, and for its effect on your speed... i guess it doesnt hurt to have it there as an option though... and not everyone shoots fast all the time... although even when im shooting one shot (95% of the time) i do not enable in cam NR.

In camera noise reduction is used when photographer, amateur or pro, doesn’t matter, shoots .JPGs and wants to skip in-computer image processing all together.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

BTW, as far as I can see the high ISO NR is applied only to jpgs. On RAWs I can't see any difference with it or without it.
