I hope not Ed - I haven't really been following the 40D threads, mainly cos I can't afford one (and plus I don't need one with the shiny new Mark IIn lol), is the 40D plagued with focusing issues like the Mark III by any chance??? I hope not...

OKay, Ed. Let's go back and re-read some of my post okay? I'll give you a few minutes...

Now then, hopefully now you realize what a retarded blanket statement you just made. "Jump on everyone who says anything negative about the 40D". Wow. Now if I were to do that, Ed, I'd never get to sleep. Especially considering the plethora of threads posted finding faults with the 40D. Nope. My gripe has always been with those people who don't even own the camera, but yet they feel they have to bash it. Or those guys who complain about a little bit of dust on their sensor, or kids who just recently discovered the joys of using the MLU and a tripod. And I've always disclosed the truth if I find that I have a fault with my gear here on POTN. Check my track record.

For the record, I still thinks it's an awesome camera. Yeah, there appears to be some FFing going on, but I won't be able to confirm that until later. If that proves to be the case then it'll get sent off. But the last thing you'll see me do is trash talk my gear since I've come to accept that sh!t happens and sometimes you just have to fix it and move on. Bitchin' about gear around here is a waste of time and energy that can be spent doing more productive things. Solution 1: If your camera is broke, take it back to the store. Solution 2: If your camera is broke, fix it.

Karmic payback? Yeah man, that's exactly what it is. After helping many members on the boards and through countless emails and PMs, that's exactly what it is. Karmic payback... and I Think I Love My Wife.

Check out the 40D track and field shots I posted here...

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=380334

Most all of the shots I took during the event came out sharp and very much in focus, so I'm hesitant to say that it's an AF issue in regards to AI Servo tracking. And I only noticed it during my last outing with my son at the park. Most of the shots I took of him were while he was static in One Shot AF focus mode. Here's an example of what I'm seeing...

Here are a couple of shots that look like all is right with the world (these are resized screen shots so don't please don't carry on about sharpness)...

Now I almost always focus on the eyeballs, so these next shots tell the tale. Although it shows that the AF point is on the cheek, I actually focused on his eye with the center AF point and shifted down slightly to frame the shot. Notice that the red steps on the slide is in much better focus than his face...

Same deal with these two crops of the same image. Focus was near his eyes, but his hands and blue guard rail are in much better focus...

Ultimately, this leads me to conclude that I might have a problem that needs fixing. Excuse me while I go make poo poo. I'll keep you posted...

I'm sure you'll come to your own decision about the camera, but are you sure it's not a shutter speed and subject movement issue? I only ask, because I notice the shots you are happy with are at a much higher shutter speed than the ones you are not? just a thought......

Nope. The third picture is proof enough if the focus was on the eyes. He's got a front focuser on his hands. Sorry to hear it OP. Welcome to the problematic 40D club.

I will be testing mine later, is ffing more noticable at different apertures/ focal lengths? only I was out shooting yesterday and most of the pics seem slightly oof, I was shooting f4 on my tamron 28-75. I havent noticed a problem shooting at f8-f11 when I do studio shots.
I also thought my nifty fifty was softer wide open. but it could just be me.
It could just be that my lens is very soft when I open it up.
I will test later as well, printed the test charts ready.

Yes - if you're relating to subject movements.
But if you relate to photographer steadiness, Slow shutter speeds normally yield [In most cases] whole picture blurs. Which clearly aren't the cases demonstrated here [e.g. - wrong parts of picture are sharp].

Ed, I've got a fart with your name all over it. If I switch systems I'm switching over to Pentax. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it. ;)

Looks like front-focus to me. Personally, I would find some static subjects just to make absolutely sure, but I would be leaning toward there being a focus miscalibration at this point.

One thing that might have helped keep your track photos in sharper focus despite this suspected front-focus issue: the AF lags behind the action slightly, so as the runner moves forward he/she moves into the in-focus area of the camera's current AF position before the camera has a chance to adjust the AF further forward to compensate for motion. So in essence your front-focusing is being nullified by the speed of the action moving toward you.

LM:

for what it's worth, I've noticed the same thing occasionally on my 40D. BUT..it only seems to happen in lower light shot. in bright light I don't seem to have the issue. it's never real bad, but a "tad" off.
