So I've heard so much about how much of a marketing gimmick the "sensor cleaning" dust shaker on the XTi/40D/etc is and apparently, it's not all BS.

Picture prior to using the in camera sensor cleaning:

After using the 40D "dust shaker" 3 times:

Whoa. It WAS a huge piece of dust or something, but I had this function turned off the whole time and seeing that it actually does something besides make a clicky noise, I might start using it.

Why does everybody list their gear here?

Cool, I hope it at least cuts down the sensor cleanings...

Dust flare! I've seen dust "flare" from flash but never like that. Pretty sweet.

It shakes it off the sensor, but where does the dust go?

I believe it's trapped by static, but I could be wrong

And I've noticed it works too, I've only had to clean my sensor once with a rocket blower during my entire time owning the XTi, and I've done lens changes in dusty places..

I swear I read some where that the 40D has a sticky strip of sorts below the LPF that the dust shaken off falls into. But I could never find that review/article again to verify.

That's a very big glob of dust that has more weight to move when jossled. I doubt the vibranting filter would do as well on small particles you need to view at 100% on your computer screen to see.

Had the 400D (XTi) since it came out and never had to clean the sensor.

Hate to tell you :(, but run auto-levels and you come up with at least 22 dust-bunnies. I posted it here:

Even if it only gets the large loose particles, its better than nothing. As long as it causes no harm I'm good with having it, but there will never be a complete replacement for wet cleaning.
