Look, before we all start to argue, I like my 40D. I believe that Canon sold me a good product and would recommend the Camera. It is not perfect, but no camera ever is.

Lord, make of this what you want. What I see is a very slight "softening" in lower light. I don't have an issue with the subtle front focus either. not enough to worry about on 100% crops. What I would like to do next is to put some colored dots around the focus point and see what happens

NOW...All photos are tripod shot @ 45 degree angle w/florescent light and light box turned on.

Wow. This is very interesting. I do realize that we must allow some room for error as far as AF is concerned, but was surprised to find that quite a few shots of my son were clearly OOF. Several things could've caused that to include, lower contrast, shooting in the shade vs. sunlight, movement of the subject out of the focus plane, etc. I'm going to try to run test similar to yours to see if I achieve the same results.

I still love the 40D. Whatever my findings, I'm still going to send it in to Canon for calibration. If anything, just for a piece of mind. Thanks for posting these.

Because I couldn't get it close enough to get 100% Crops that showed anything.

This is a really quick dirty test. The next phase would be to use colored dots in an attempt to confuse the cross sensor to see if it likes color or contrast more. NONE of these results are unacceptable for the f stop and given light for normal printing.

Thank God I'm not a Professional 100% Crop Focus Chart Photographer or I'd be screwed.

The 50mm test sums it up for me. My camera focuses the way it should. The "ever so slight" softness at 100% crops seems to be an light/contrast issue with the cross sensors...imho.

I would also be interested in testing exposure lock and then moving from light/dark - low/high contrast areas to see if that make a difference. The focus chart is nice but I would like to set up a textured angled "something" that had natural sunlight and shade on it.

This would be a better test.

For the Record the Sigma 70-200 EX has given me the most trouble with this softness.

I would do the same, only it would leave me without a camera for the weeks Canon would have it. :(

Canon can keep it as long as they need to. I've got two other bodies I can use, so I'm not worried about it. ;)

recalibrating a body under warranty only takes a few days at Londons Borehamwood service centre. I'd be suprised if it took weeks anywhere.

I sent my 30D to Canon out in California... I had it back in 9 days. They calibrated it and it is doing great now - if only I could do better more consistently!

Alright well im sad to say that Im also on my second 40D. My first one was uber sharp, but threw me a err99 and err02 during a photoshoot sat. which well pissed me off... So today I picked up my replacement. I wanted to make sure it was as sharp as old one. Now that im more anal Im worried that its not. I think I need another eye to look at this.

so is this one sharp?

My question to all the good and sharp 40D's is.. how consistent is the AF I had it on the tripod and live view on with mag x10 and every time i would focus the camera some times 2 out of 5 it would front focus. I guess i never really check this with my old one because it was sharp. Now im so anal about sharpness I want to know how consistent the AF should be.

That's as sharp as the 50/1.8 can get wide open at 100% crop. AF looks dead-on perfect for my eye. That is for all intents and purposes the limits any reasonable person should expect.
