This is the reply I got form Canon asking about HTP, and the process as to how it using HTP enabled effected the image, I asked if it was a DDP/software process, or applied to the image in camera, and was not a software process after
"Dear Customer,
Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding your Canon EOS 40D.
From the information supplied I can confirm that Highlight Tone Priority improves the highlight detail. The dynamic range is expanded from the standard 18% gray to bright highlights. The gradation between the grays
and highlights becomes smoother.
The custom function on the EOS 40D gives you the option to enable or disable Highlight Tone Priority. When enabled, it will be applied to the image on the camera."
For me would be the logical way to do it, not everyone uses DPP, and may print straight from camera (if you can with raw images)
Oh took about two weeks to get that reply

has anyone?
HTP would have been a big help on those
