I would call it something classier than Groomals...hell that leaves the field wide open.

I guess this sort of shoot makes sense for couples who dont want to spend any time away from their guests during their wedding day although the most we have ever managed with a couple so far is 20 mins so thats not really long, but I have seen other photographers who have whisked the couple off for a couple of hours during the day to get their couple shots .. that wouldnt float for my clients though.

MOWP is a typical example, theres a couple of photographers on there who are followed doing a shoot and the whole time I was watching it I was thinking theres no way we would have the amount of time they have been given on the day ... nor would we want to take couples away from their guests for a long time, one of our selling points is that we wont take couples away from their guests for very long at all.

Look forward to seeing some shots from it though matey, can imagine you can get very creative when someone gives you a few hours for the shots!

I am going to be offering this, and call it "Love the Dress" instead of "Trash the Dress"

well, in Utah people are calling it "Groomals" and the shoots are becoming more and more popular. I did one the week before the couples wedding and next Saturday I'll be doing another one 2 weeks after the wedding. I'm just not sure if I want to follow the trend with naming it "Groomals"

I like the idea but not the "Groomals" name .. but I can't suggest anything better at the moment.

The shoot itself makes a lot of sense (unless the B&G are really traditional about only getting wedding day photos on the wedding day).

You're more relaxed and would have more time, and your choice of weather conditions .. but the logistics & additional cost (hair, makeup, etc.) might prove a problem.

Groomal ... sounds like something you do to the groom so he would be well-behaved on the wedding day :D (... or make him become infertile)

This is exactly what we call it. Brides here are HORRIFIED at the very mention of trashing their dress. They don't hear anything after that because of the drum beats in their head screaming about how much they don't want their dress ruined.

On the other hand, we find our brides don't mind getting a little dirty at all.

So - Love your dress. A perfect way to market the sessions - for us anyway.

Cheers,
Naomi

We do them 80% of the time -- we call it a Formal Pre-Shoot.

:)
They RULE.

I'm thinking of calling it Bride+Groom Session or Him+Her Session. What do you think?

That's probably the best I think - the "groomals" thing at best will get a reaction of "What's that all about," to "excuse me, but what did you say?" As straight forward as this new label is, it conveys exactly what you want to do - it is self explanatory.

I hope it works out for you. As Lisa said, a lot of B&G's don't like to see each other before hand. Maybe that applies to about 1/3 of MY situations too. More realistically though, this would involve possibly an additional tux rental fee for the guy if it was not right before the wedding, as well as a LOT of dressing effort on the part of the bride.

I've never had anybody ask me for this sort of thing, and I don't see it happening in my area. That's not to say that it wouldn't work for you, and I certainly don't want to discourage your effort.

In some ways it almost sounds like the studio portrait sessions that were pretty popular prior to the 60's when portable/medium format cameras weren't as prevalent as they became later on. Obviously you would be doing it any number of venues, having the convenient portability of a "35mm camera", but I see some similarities in the concept. Good luck with the idea.

In Toronto's Asian community (those not grown up in NA) something similiar and very popular, the B&G typically goes to a studio(or a location) and did a set of perfectly controlled shots and one of the pictures usually end up in the front door of the reception hall. It's a must have thing back in HK and Taiwan. It's basically a studio portrait in wedding dress, some of the studio have a lot of different backdrops as well.
The option is not very popular with those that grow up here though, which usually want coverage on their engagement and/or wedding day only.

Quite interesting Louie - you've retained one of our earlier, classic studio traditions :D. Very interesting.
