Hi, I have recently posted a couple of my pics in the critique section and feel that I have reached the limit regarding picture quality with my current camera (Fuji Finepix S5600 P&S)

Here are a couple of my best shots so far;

IMAGE: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s185/NadsF/Hongi/2007_10040015_1.jpg

My dilemma is this;

have been offered a Canon 20D at what appears to be a very reasonable price.

Body - £300
Sigma 28mm (45mm standard lens on crop sensor) f1.8 for £100
Sigma 18-200 (28-320) for £150

Are the lenses suitable for the pics I am looking at taking?

We could only afford one so which would be better (have been offered a standard lens free)?

Secondly is this worth the money or should I hold out until I can afford the 400D?

Baring in mind that this could take a good 12 months :(

My main frustration with the current camera is the focus speed that can take up to 1.5 seconds, also I cannot add macro lenses or external flashes (except a slave flash)

All thoughts on this appreciated as I do not want to rush into a purchase I may later regret:confused:

Getting a 20D is a good idea. A used 350D, 400D might be a better bargain. Not sure either of those lenses are what you need though.

Thanks for the quick reply - I have been looking at used 400D / 350D but both are at least £150 more expensive than the 20D that I have been offered.

Problem is, I have no experience of SLR's so I am a bit blind in this purchase:confused:

If I went for the 20D, what would be a good lens for close up aquatic pics?

The 18-55mm kit lens is a good choice for closeups. It'll do a 1:3 macro at 55mm. Is that the one you've been offered free?

Yes I think it is which would make camera and lens come to £300 ( approx $600) - Good deal?

Sounds good to me if the 20D is in good condition. KEH is selling a 20D with kit lens in EX+ condition for $819 right now.

I have the Canon 60mm f/2.8 macro. It's an amazing lens. Recommended!

One 20D purchased and arriving Sunday;)

Now all I have to do is learn how to use it:confused:

The camera is coming with a standard 18-55mm lens so presume this will be ok to start with

Consider the 35mm F:2...It's the normal focal length for the 20D: it focuses closer and is MUCH sharper than the 18-55 lens.

In addition to improving your camera/lens gear, to work on improving your photos you also may want to consider your lighting set up such as diffusing your light and adding additional light sources off of the camera to illumine your backgrounds (avoiding harsh shadows).

You'll enjoy the 20D. Now go save up from some good glass.
