I used to lock the focus on my Minolta dimage A2, by swtching to manual focus on the lense after partially depressing the shutter button. Can this be down on the 400d without causing damage?

Hi safetyman

I don't really see why this would "cause damage". Wear and tear on your AF switch, maybe, but no real damage to your camera. Let's see what the others think. I don't think there is any other way to focus lock other than to keep the shutter button depressed halfway.

Set Cf.4 to 1 and you can focus with the * button instead. Problem solved.

Check out custom function 4. Set it to 1 and you can use the * button to focus.

Gooble beat me to it.

With Cf.4 set to 0, the * button overrides the AEL provided by the half press of the shutter button. With Cf.4 set to 1 the only AEL is the half press of the shutter button.
