Just be aware that the creator of that video posted the link here in a thread on the use of TCs with the 40D and 400mm f/5.6 lenses: his successful results are by no means typical of what many (including me) are getting with TCs...

I had no issue with Sigma 2x on a 70-200. Hunts in very low light, but is spot on in good/great light.

Since the camera is on a tripod I assume the focus point "moves" around once he achieved focus because the video camera's angle changes. Is that right?

I may have missed it, but did he mention whether he taped the pins on the TC?

Very nice, Shawn.

I did specifically say "400mm f/5.6 lenses" though - I've seen other reports that f/4 lenses + 2x TCs work (bizarrely enough) but 400mm f/5.6 lenses definitely have their share of problems.

Your 70-200mm is a f/2.8 lens, so there would be absolutely no reason why it wouldn't work, and as such is pointless to post in this discussion... this is about f/5.6 aperture lenses working with a 1.4x or f/4's with a 2x.. because technically they aren't supposed to work on a 40D..

Really, Title doesn't say this...OP didn't express this....Forum rules don't say this. So let's just say that I will post, when and where I feel I can add. How'd ya find this post? Hide and watch me continue to post....IT'S A HOOT. You and Keith R can continue to discuss amongs yourself though.

Lol.. ok... did ya even watch the video? must not have, otherwise you would have known what the thread was about. Usually it is a good idea to read more than just the title of a thread before posting ;) .. anyways..I never said you weren't allowed to post what you did.. just said it was kinda pointless, and you didn't really, "Add" anything constructive as your situation is in no way related to the issue at hand.. wasn't meant as a personal attack.. but whatever,

Oh, I found this post cause I have a 40D, and a 100-400mm f4.5-5.6, which I would like to use with a TC.. don't quite understand where you are going with that one... but thx for coming out ;)

Hi. I shot and posted the video. The pins were taped, as they have to be when using an f/5.6 lens and any teleconverter on a no 1D series body.

The movement you see of the subject vs the focus point is actually due to the drift effect you get with IS turned on when using a tripod. I was using AI Servo, which is pretty much what I always use, and left my finger on the AF-On button - hence the drift in the first demo. I think for the second demo I just pressed AF-On briefly so you don't see the drift occur.

I shot with the camcorder handheld so that I could pan round and show the lens and teleconverter so sorry for the shakey footage. This was the only approach I could think of to prove that my 40D focuses quite well with my 100-400 and 1.4X, as others had no success at all with this combination.

You can also see my efforts at focus tracking with the 40D, Kenko 1.4X and EF 100-400 @ 400mm, handheld, in these two albums....

*** WARNING *** This combination is working well for me. Some people have no success at all with this kit combination. Do not assume that because I have a working combination that it is safe to go ahead and combine f/5.6 lenses with a teleconverter on a 40D body. Do your own checks. I took my lens and teleconverter to the store to check it out before proceeding with my purchase. The shop demo body worked OK indoors, in a shopping mall, and the body I bought works pretty well outdoors. There is no doubt the bare lens works a good deal better as far as AF is concerned. For those who have less luck than me I do not know if the "problem" is with the camera, the lens, or the teleconverter.
