Thanks. I shoot both, and I'd have to agree with you, although baseball is probably the most difficult of any of the sports I shoot.

Nice. Images look very nice and sharp. Plus very light. Is that the super expensive 85mm or the normal one?

It's the 1.8 version. The L isn't appropriate for sports because the extra glass in it actually makes the focusing mechanism slower. For gym sports, the 1.8 rules!

I love hearing people compare which sport is the hardest to shoot. I'm curious, what do you think contributes to the difficulty of shooting? Here's my list

  1. The venue - ie things like lighting, availability of spots to gain desirable line of site, position relative to action (how close can you get to take a viable shot in the appropriate context to communicate the event),
  2. The nature of the action - slow vs. fast, team vs. individual,
  3. Technical aspects of your equipment - Which can change the importance of the previous factors,
  4. Your interest in the sport - If you aren't really interested, regardless of your talent, it will see harder, and
  5. Most importantly, your knowledge of or aptitude in the sport. If you don't understand the sport, winning shots will be luck or merely copy cat.
I ask this because Liza wrote "I shoot both (in reference to Volleyball and Night Football), and I'd have to agree with you, although baseball is probably the most difficult of any of the sports I shoot." That made hard about what makes my preferred sport (gymnastics) difficult. I'd say it's harder than any of these. You rarely know where the athlete is going to be, you rarely have adequate lighting, they move deceptively fast in ALL directions, blah blah blah. I think it's the hardest sport to shoot and get marketable results, but I think basketball or hockey would be the most difficult for me because I have no knowledge of the game and no interest.

What thinkest thou?

Very nice shots Liza. I know how hard it is to get good volleyball shots. Man I miss shooting HS sports. My youngest is now in College and of course they are not in as many sports in college.

Liza,
wow awesome VB shots. I have the 85mm 1.8 lens and have yet to use it for VB, but I think I will now that I have seen yours, I have been using my Sigma 70-200 2.8 working nice, but sometimes the hands or ball will have the blurr look, I don't like that, I like your crisp clear pictures

Good to know. The image quality is very good. Did you run it thru noise reduction tools like neat image ?
