my 30D produces this crap from time to time... I don't understand where the quality crispness disappears! is this motion blur? could be at 1/30, but come on its a nifty very light and handholdable for longer exposures... it doesn't look like motion blur though, more like noise ruining details (but its iso 800 only) sh8t...

How can I improve?

I was really pissed to find out that most of the photos were of very low quality, I think I lost grip for photography - I mean I used to be better, heaps better :( or is it my equipment? *horrible idea runs through my mind, and yes its forty...D... no I must help this... don't tell me its my camera :( say its my fault let me know some tips :)

ooo I'm mumbling again... must stop smoking.

Buy 40D and stop smoking - you'll start feeling better, instantly! :D

step 1:

common sense. If you can only get 1/30th at f/5.6 but your lens can open up to 1.8, don't friggin' use f/5.6.

noise and iso are partially realted, but you will get more noise on underexposed shots, shadow areas, as well as environmental temperature (and possibly humidity). Supposedly really warm conditions can produce noise on sensors? Am I right, or have I misunderstood?

Its your fault as the 40D will not improve on image IQ over the 30D _ OK I said it.

Shooting people at 1/30 sec with a 50mm on a cropped sensor should produce some softening, either from camera shake and/or subject movement.

Dim light, no flash, with 1/30 (with no-IS), is just SCREAMING for camera/motion blur in my opinion. :)

i have to concur with the OP on this, i shot at an outdoor event this weekend, and am absolutely gutted with the amount of noise that some of my shots had... i was shooting at ISO400 and ISO800 however these were at longer focal lengths, but the 30D let me down very badly!

lighting and exposure's were good, but a majority (nearly 90%) of my shots had vast amount of noise, unrecoverable IQ...

I think I lost grip for photography

Looks like it ;)

1/30 is a tough lottery for getting successful shot at focal length of 50mmx1.6=80mm
If you wanna persist, get a Pentax with in-camera IS

With all due respect, Niraj, that sounds difficult to believe at face value. Could you post some examples with Exif?

I used my 30D at 400mm plus (usually a 1.4x TC on my 100-400mm) and 400 ISO plus all the time, and have rarely if ever had to bin a picture due to a "vast amount of noise, unrecoverable IQ"...

I sometimes can handhold 1/20 and get acceptable results ;) this works okay for me in case of light lenses.

I'll search my gallery and show u some examples :)
