i dont think its a matter of focal length at 12mm vs 10mm since at that range you are only getting more coverage on the outside edges of the frame. i think the 12 vs 10 debate comes in when shooting something like landscapes.

But it will effect how much the center subject "pops" out at you.

You're right there: I's a matter of perspective, hence shooting distance.
The FL will only determine how much of your subject is in the frame at a given distance. (Leaving lens distortion out of the equation).
In the above example, the 10mm shot is from closer up then the 12 mm shot.

I would think that the phrase "Here, fishy fishy fishy!" might be apt at this point.

Yeah, you can definitely get a pretty pronounced distortion with the Tokina 12-24 if you get closer.

Here's a quick shot I took of my car last year with my 12-24 just to see what it would be like, and I still could have gotten a bit closer.

I'm thinking it's a fisheye though... Look at how far out the plate mounting point is on the 3... And look at the angle of the side going to the right... That's a pretty dramatic angle, more so that you can easily get on a cropped body with 12mm...

I'd bet it's FF and that it's maybe 12mm but more likely a 15mm fisheye.

That's right, dude. 15mm FE on 1.3x crop body to be exact. This is when I still had the 1D2N. ;)

Getting closer and lower like everyone is saying should get you there. Distortion is still going to be a bit different in your shots than in a lot of the commercial shots you see because of the fovcf of your camera. With a 1.6 crop body you don't get the same drastic distortion that you would see on a ff or on a medium to large format camera that i suspect a lot of commercial shots are taken with. Thats not to say however that you can't get some really neat distortion from your setup, just experiment away. The lower you get, the more you can angle your camera up, almost getting a bit of a worms eye view perspective and that should help with the distortion as well.
