If say i was trying to photograph a small bird with the 500, because the size of the middle focus point(the square) is big it will sometimes have trouble to stay locked on to the subject.

I dont know if the square focus point on the MKIII are the same size ?

In my case the bird was bigger than the center focus point and the focus point was on the bird all the time but focus still switched to the background. I think it was with my 100-400.

If you do go for it - make sure you are not paying more than £2649 including VAT for it.

Every thread about the MKIII turns into this. Sheesh.

Anyway, mine works awesome. Has since day one. I would buy another one without hesitation.

Thats difficult to answer but my guess is that most of the out of foucs shots I got was caused by other factors than the camera it self. Like if someone moved in the car while shooting.

I would consider that to be a compliment for 1D Mk III, not a criticism.

I can't say for sure.

Assuming you tried to focus 1000 times (probably more), and take the larger of the two numbers (that is 2), so your 1D Mk III failed you in focusing at a rate less or equal to 0.2%.

Canon 1D Mk III/5D2, Sigma 50mm f/1.4, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX, Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX, Canon 85/1.8, Canon 100/2.8 IS macro, Canon 135/2, Sigma 150-500 OS, Canon 500 f/4 IS

Well when it gets the shot its a WOW and i got some nice ones today- im just back from birding and the darn thing played up more today that ever before often refused to focus at all even pumping the shutter it just would not focus or even try to .
many times it kept focusing on the background and just stayed there .
i would waite maby try a 40d till the MK3 has a fix.
Rob.
