I have a 4 Gb A-Data card I use with my XTi ... I also have a Lexar 4 Gb Professional 133X, and a couple of Ultra II 4 GB, which i use in the Xti or the 40D ...

The A-Data card is no doubt the slowest to transfer files to the computer, using the same card reader as the other two. In the 40D, my non quantitative feeling is that the Lexar is the quickest, with the Ultra II and the A-Data trailing, and too close to call. In the XTi there is no difference in any of them, or so it seems to me.

All this said, if I didn't have the other two to compare it to, I would probably think the A-Data is fine.

I've got a 16GB Speedy card and it's far from being speedy. I had never seen a true speed rating on them until now while looking at the newegg site and it's quoted at only 40X. That explains its speed or lack thereof. It definitely can't keep up with 5 fps 12mp bursts and may slow you down if shooting bursts.

Reliability wise I've had absolutely no problems with it though and I use it alot so it goes through regular formats and re-use.

So if speed is a concern then skip it, but if price and reliability are your factors then I would recommend it.

Sounds like my Kingston Elite Pro 8GB. Only 45x & fine for weddings but if I was slappin' a lot of ass at 8FPS for sports and such, it'd kill me.

My apologies ... my A-Data card is NOT a "Speedy", it's a "Turbo", claiming to be 266X ...

I have a A Data 8gb speedy, only had it about a month but so far so good, for $29 and 3 days from HK to Melbourne it was worth a risk.

Can;t say good or bad about this card, but why do people spend over 1k bucks for a good Canon camera then turn around and look the the cheapest memory cards they can find.
This reminds me of my Ex getting on her friends buying expensive good camera, then getting their film developed at the cheapest place they could.
The question has to be are your photos worth the chance this isn't a good card. Not saying a name brand will never be bad, but ...

A-Data is a fairly large memory manufacturer.

I've not had any problems with the one I have. In fact, I've not had any problems with the Kingston cards i have but do get corrupt images from all of my SanDisk cards at one time or another. So much for 'name brand' cards. I think the cards are about like VHS machines were/are in that all the guts are the same and only the shells are different. Some might be a little faster than others but unless you are shooting fast moving sports and the like who the heck cares?

That's the reason that I don't hesitate to use many of the non-big 2 like AData, PNY, Kingston, Patriot, Transcend. Those all have a history in the RAM business. So to my experience, they are as much established brands as Sandisk and Lexar are as it pertains to memory products.

Because of that and since I've never had a problem with any one of them, I have no reason to believe that Sandisk and/or Lexar are necessarily the best or only way to go.

What factors are left after that? Speed, price, and warranty.

My brother in law who is a designer for leading chip maker told me last year that all solid state memory has gotten to be quite good. Most of the manufacturing plants in Asia are now several years old, assembly processes have been refined, quality control is improved, and many of the issues that caused defects have been eliminated. His job entails training overseas factories any revisions to the process of flashing chips so he's constantly evaluating manufacturing tolerances.

That being said - many of othe chip makers buy from the same manufacturing sources. I know this for a fact because I work for a transportation company. We move oversears freight for 2 very well known U.S. memory card companies. The chips come from the same manufacturers, move by the same trucks to the ports in China and Malaysia, even move on the same boats into the Port of Long Beach, where they take different paths going to their respective U.S. factories for packaging. We as consumers pay a price for that packaging, especially if the packaging bears the logo of a popular brand.

The bottom line here is that I would buy a chip based solely on price so long as it's from a well-known retailer with a good return policy (as opposed to an eBay seller with no return policy). I have several lesser known cards from Transcend and A-Data and I'm contemplating buying a 32GB CF for $99 from Newegg which as of today show 19 of 20 positive reviews.

Perhaps these lesser known cards do not fit everyone's needs, especially in terms of speed, but from a purely economic standpoint, it is a good deal. Use the reviews that can be found in every online retail store to separate the good stuff from the bad stuff and buy the most memory that fits your budget.

So is rayovac but seriously, would you count on those batteries keeping a flashlight lit while the power is out? Companies maybe established but there is plenty of proof that because companies still exist does not make them good and I single out PNY technologies. I had SO many complaints about them from customers. They were selling 3 1GB cards for under $30 when typically a standard 1GB from Lexar, Sandisk, and I'm sure even Kingston had them for $20 for one. Horrible in memory cards, just horrible.

I think Casio is the standing example of an established company that sucks beyond all measure in cameras. They're had more recalls all the toys that had led paint on them. I exaggerate of course but yeah, they suck.

Since when is a lower price horrible?

What were the real complaints, and were they from people who had a clue?
