Chuck Westfall, "The Digital Journalist" - Tech-Tips Oct. 2007:
http://www.digitaljournalist.org/issue0710/tech-tips.html (external link)

Looks like the Canon 5D had earlier production units with a lesser brighter, lesser Warmer LCD display. Fixed in later production versions.

"There are many different aspects to consider when comparing the LCD displays of the EOS-1D Mark III to other EOS bodies, especially the 5D. First of all, there have been two versions of the 5D LCD. Early production models have a different backlight than current production models. The newer version is warmer than the older one, but that's not why it was changed. The main reason was to increase the brightness level to make the screen easier to see in daylight conditions. If you compare an early production 5D to a current production model, the current one is a full two steps brighter. At the same time, the newer version is warmer, as previously mentioned. Once you get used to either one, it's difficult to feel comfortable with the other"

Interesting to know starting at which Serial # ?

not really a surprise. Manufactures do this all the time to quietly fix an issue they're having in production or with users in the field. I'd also like to know the starting number...

I wonder whether the same [occasional improvements] occurs in Canon lenses too ?
[I'm not refering to major changes from Mrk1 to Mrk2 ...]

I have emailed Westfall and asked him about which cameras have the brighter screen. As a 5D owner, I really want to know. I will post his response when he replies. :D

I received the following response from Chuck Westfall via email

Hi, Richard:

The serial number data is considered confidential, but I can say that factory production was updated to the newer LCD in July of 2006.

Thanks for reading Tech Tips!

Our 5D with serial number 1863767177 has a screen that is brighter than the one on our other 5D with serial number 0930600681 - but it's not 2 stops difference. The 2 screens also have slightly different colour casts as well.

This looks like an early version LCD. According to Chuck Westfall, the newer version is Warmer.

I don't think ANY of the LCDs on any of the cameras really do justice to the image. Unless you have the histogram on, using the LCD to gauge exposure is not a great idea.

I hope that Canon will soon introduce an even higher resolution LCD (even higher than today's 40D's LCD), alike the Nikon's D300/D3 LCD.

A good resolution & brighter LCD allows the judging of sharpness of an image without the need for a Computer display.
