Does anyone know why Canon recommends not using LiveView with a Microdrive??

I assume its because of heat. Microdrives have moving parts and generate heat when used.

That's what I originally thought ti would be but after thinking a little more, would they really get add that much more heat to cause problems with it? Is there any data transfer to the Microdrive before the frame is taken, like swap space (page file) on a PC? I doubt it but I have to ask since Microdrives are notoriously slow, perhaps causing trouble. I used the Microdrive with LiveView here and there without issue but I don't want to cause any damage to it or the camera. My problem is that I can't afford other cards right now and the only two I have is the 6Gb Microdrive and a 2Gb CF. Considering the speed of the 40D and using RAW or RAW+Jpeg the 2Gb fills up FAST. The 6Gb will at least give me a few hundred shots. On the 2Gb I get 115 RAW+Jpeg, 510 Jpeg, or 150 RAW which isn't much.

I thought it was because live-view really sucks the batteries dry fast and micro drives require quite a bit of juice as well.

That would have been my guess, Lots of current draw.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I think it's heat...in the manual they talk about heat quite a lot with the 40D.

Well, Canon is telling you not to do it...so...

I used the Microdrive with LiveView here and there without issue but I don't want to cause any damage to it or the camera.

Then stop doing it. Their manual advises it for a reason.

On the 2Gb I get 115 RAW+Jpeg, 510 Jpeg, or 150 RAW which isn't much.

Why shoot raw+jpeg anyways? Just do a quick run through ACR or lightroom and get the jpeg later. Also, 150 raw files is a ton. Normally youd take a few jped pictures to make sure that you captured the scene properly. With raw, you have much more latitude to correct a scene so why not just compose it properly and then just take a couple. Unless youre taking 5~10 raws of the same thing, 150 is quite a few. With Lightrooms ability to change whitebalance on a jpeg almost flawlessly, I really think raw is just a headache and spacehog and more trouble than its worth...But thats just me. I know you might be able to tweak that .000000000004858% more sharpness out of the picture but I prefer to look at the whole picture instead of individual pixels -.-
