I've promised to give my 5D to my sister as soon as its replacement comes out, but it's taking a lot longer than I had expected. I'm getting impatient now and am thinking of getting the 1D Mark III instead, but don't have any experience with it so I'm not sure what the IQ is like on the 1D Mark III. I'm in love with the IQ of the current 5D and for the most part, it's the most important thing to me (all the features, framerate, etc come next).

So for those of you that have both the 5D and the 1D Mark III, can I please pick your brain? Do you think that 5D has better IQ than the 1D Mark III?

Hmmm...it seems like going from the full-frame 5D to the 1.3x cropped 1D is, well, an interesting choice. Part of the 5D outstanding image quality is directly related to the larger pixel wells that it uses and I wonder if the 1D can match that, and of course full frame is, well, full frame :)

Why not wait a little bit and save some bucks for the 1Ds MkIII? Spendy, but it sound truly awesome, and if you were to have only one camera for any occasion, that may be the pot of gold! 'Course the 5D update will undoubtably be awesome in its own class...

I have and use both - IMPO the think the Mark III gives a better image - in fact I'm considering selling the 5D and getting another Mark III.

Full frame is full frame - I agree with that. I just was hoping that with the "newer" technology, the 1D Mark III would have caught up with 5D somewhat. I know a lot of people argue 2.8MP isn't a big deal, but I love large prints and I love to look at my pics at 100%.

If money was absoluutely no object, I'd get the 1Ds Mark III. The problem is, I've just started back into SLRs less than a year ago and spent more than I want to think about. At this point, it's not an "ability" thing as much as it's a guilt thing. Also, I brought up the 1Ds Mark III to my wife and for the first time ever, she thought it was a lot of money for a camera toy. She's never complained about other stuff I've bought (and I've bought way more toys more expensive) so I'm taking it as a hint.

I was thinking the 1D Mark III would be a good compromise because if I have kids, I figure this thing will AF on the fastest and naughtiest. :) Also, I was incorrectly under the assumption that highlight priority was exclusive to the 1D Mark III. Finally, at $4500, I can do the 1D Mark III under the radar. I think my wife is likely to notice a $10K expense.

Well the HTP was until the 40D was released, and for me the jury is still out on HTP and how it is recorded by the camera, the 40D it suppose to effect the image no proof yet though that is a Canon statement, and MK 3 people say it is in the raw data, and I have not had a MK 3 to look at it.. I find it stupid that it should not be recorded to the image and be software effected meaning you need to use DDP for it to effect he image, all seems a grey area atm

having taken a few shots with a 5d, and 7500 with a mkiii, i can tell you that the mkiii has a sharper, cleaner photo with slightly better colors. that being said, the 5d is no slouch, and there's no substitute for the narrow dof of the 5d.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

I own both and I love these cameras. It's difficult to pick a winner with these two cuz they take good photographs. Period.

I mean they really are different cameras geared for different users. I think in the right hands either is a great choice. The one thats better is the one that best fits your needs.

Flip a coin. You're the limiting factor anyway.

JDizzel is right, both are darn good. Personally I think the 5D makes a better image, bu tthen the Mark III is not slouch either.

I've got 2X 5Ds and use them on stuff that isn't moving, and I use the Mark III on stuff that is moving (including jets up to 700MPH and close). They both have their uses and they are both good at what they do.

Of course I think the backup 5D is going to get sold shortly to help pay for for the EOS-1ds Mark III.

If you are that worried about it, just get one of these (external link). In the real world I would think it depends on what you want the camera to do and how you intend to accomplish it; I think the 5D is an incredible value for the money, but it won't satisfy everyone.

I would concur with this. For all-around situations, I find my MarkIII better.
