The 5D had better IQ, but you wouldn't notice it except for large prints 11x14 and larger

The 5D has better IQ, but it is hard to tell under any circumstances or print size.

If you are that worried about it, just get one of these (external link). In the real world I would think it depends on what you want the camera to do and how you intend to accomplish it; I think the 5D is an incredible value for the money, but it won't satisfy everyone.

I almost pulled the trigger on that, until I found out it doesn't come with a V6. I got one with my Nissan Altima and for less money.

Sweet new gear for a photogenic new year!

Since I've got your attention, I'm wondering if you ever miss the extra 2.8MP.

No, I thought I would but I've printed up my photos quite large from the M3 (20x30) with no problem or pixelation (and the prints far exceeded my expectations). So, no I haven't missed the extra pixels. I doubt I'd print any larger than that myself....

I sold off my 5D, which was great, for the 1D. I liked the rugged body, two memory cards, SPEED, and oh yeah, the speed.
I don't shoot sports really, but speed in shooting is a must for most street photography too.

However, thinking to sell this and get the 1Ds, to go full frame, and double the image size. The 1.3x is not a big deal.

How about for cropping? Every once in a while, I "zoom" in or flip from landscape to portrait orientation (when I don't get the composition right the first time) and it seems the extra resolution would help.

Speed as in frame rate? Hrmm...I'm not sure I need 10 fps, but 5fps would sure be nice.

Hell, if money were no object I'd have a pair of 1D Mark III, and a 1Ds Mark III! I'd keep a 5D on hand for when I just wanted to go "light". Too bad I actually have to work to pay for this stuff that makes me hardly any money, but offers me pure shooting pleasure. :(

From the sample images I've seen I think it would be very difficult for the average joe to discern the difference between the two bodies. I think it takes the critical eye of a professional pixel peeper to make the call. As many have already pointed out, both are very capable bodies and the 5D was pretty much the benchmark for Canon IQ since it's introduction.

Why two 1D Mark IIIs and one 1Ds Mark III and not vice versa?
