I just ordered a 1D Mark III - so now I'll be going to Alaska next month with that, a 500mm f/4 and a 30D (which I can use the 10-22 on). Probably also take along the 300mm f/4, rather than the 400 f/5.6 due to low light conditions. If anyone is curious, this is the workshop I'm going on: http://www.wildlightnaturephotography.com …_Bald_Eagles_Workshop.htm (external link) . The photographer is local to the Twin Cities, which is nice for me.

I'd been reading about the Mark III for some time and going back and forth about whether I should get it. After reading this Wildlife Shooter's Guide to Using the Canon 1D Mark III (external link) article, I was convinced I should try it. The author lives in my part of the country (upper midwest) and also shoots a lot of eagles, so his tips look promising. I really hope we have a cold winter because I plan to spend a lot of time eagle hunting. Now where's that brown truck?!?

Congrats on the purchase. The workshop sounds like a lot of fun.

Don't forget to post some pictures.

Thanks - hopefully I'll have enough time to figure out how to use the camera before the trip. I'm planning on getting Art Morris's Mark III User Guide to give myself a jump start. I'll definitely be posting lots of photos - y'all will be sick of eagles by the time I'm done! ;)

Ok, so I ordered it from Canoga Camera, and they left me a message wanting order confirmation. I called back and was all prepared for some upselling, which fortunately they didn't try. They did start asking me a bunch of customer survey questions, one of which was "are you a photographer." I just started laughing and said "I'm spending $4000 on a camera, of course I'm a photographer!" ;) I don't think the rep knew quite how to respond to that. She asked me what I shoot with and I said "a Mark III, starting next week!" And then I was all about IS IT SHIPPING TODAY?!? And the answer was yes!

Sounds like a great trip. How are you transporting your photo gear on the plane?

I can fit most of it, including the 500 f/4, in a Think Tank Airport International. I would have gotten the Airport Security, but it's out of stock everywhere. I'm also taking a TT Urban Disguise for my notebook computer, and whatever doesn't fit in the roller. Not sure yet about my tripod, I have a TT Bazooka, and I'm hoping I can squeeze that in as carry-on as well. Everything else that I can live with losing - clothes, etc will go in checked luggage. I figure if that gets lost, I can always buy more clothes when I get there!

How many hours of daylight will you have to shoot in? You are going to have the whole state to yourself, except for a few hunters, tourist season is over now.
Be prepaired to shoot in bad/wet weather.
I went in June 2006 and would have loved to have a 500 4L with me.

Have a great trip & enjoy the new MKIII.

Congrats on the new toy. I did an Alaska trip about 7-8 years ago and I wish I was into photography then like I am now. It is one of the most beautiful places you will ever see. I was actually thinking of trying to convince my wife to go again in a year or two now that I know how to get good shots and have something other than the old 3mp P&S I had last time.

Rebel XTi, 430ex, Tammy 28-75, nifty fifty, kit lens, tons of reading, not enough practice, and two gorgeous subjects (my kiddies)
