hello everyone,

i am so happy that winter is almost here, its snowboarding season. I have an xti and i was wondering if it is ok to take it out onto the slopes, or if its too cold and i might mess up the camera. My friend snowboards and so do i, i wanted to take some sweet pics of him and me but i dont know if its going to mess up the camera. Do you guys have any ideas on winter-proofing a camera? I read the manuel and it doent tell me anything. All hep is greatly appriciated!!

Thanks in advance

Every time Ive taken my P&S up with me when I snowboard the LCD screen ends up not working, so between that and falling the only thing I could reccomend is only take it out of you dont plan on doing much riding yourself. Up here it gets pretty packed, so its very hard to even do something as simple as stop and adjust your goggles without out someone damn near hitting you

Btw hows the snow so far out there? Its bone dry out here so far, not looking so good for this years season

I board with my 30D with grip and 24-105 attached. Sure there is a chance that something can happen to it but it is so hard to go to the P&S after using these things.

I headed up Mt. Ruapehu earlier this winter (New Zealand). It was amazing. I'm not experienced at snowboarding, skiing or photography so it was a learning experience. I just stood by a jump all day and took over 1000 photos. Some of them turned out nicely (well I thought so anyhow). It was a beautiful day, not snowing and around 10 degrees celsius. One thing I was warned of is to be careful when taking your kit from inside to outside or visa versa. You need to plastic bag (a ziplock will do) really well before going inside or coming out to prevent condensation on your lens. It was such a nice day so I didnt have to do this (same temp in and out). If your planning on skiing or boarding with your camera with you I would suggest having your kit inside a hard case. An older guy skied up next to me on the slopes with his 5d, I was so jealous but because he was actually skiing as well he had it in a hard case, in case of accidents. I hope this helps. If you actually want to protect your camera and lenses from snow, sleet, rain etc then maybe look into getting a stormjacket. I havent got one but some people on here recommend them. Good luck!

Keep a spare battery inside your shirt pocket beneath the coat. Cold weather will slow a battery and while you're shooting with the spare rewarm the other inside the coat to coax more life from it.

Other than that, just exercise common sense, have fun, and post some of the shots for us to see! :)

1d with which I'm shooting is better sealed, but when it comes to cold it's still kinda same thing. And considering huge portion of my shooting is skiing, I actually have quite some experiences with it ;) Cold is not a problem for camera. Normally I end up standing on hill for 3 or 4 hours at temperatures down to -25c. Only "problem" I have is that batteries lasts less then with normal temperatures. Everything else works same way as with normal temperatures. So take another battery, keep it in inside pockets and you will be fine. And when not needed, take battery out of camera and keep it in inside pocket. That's all :)
PS: If everything will be fine, I will be skiing at least a bit, in less then 2 weeks, when Alpine skiing World cup starts. I can hardly wait for this!

You also should be careful to not let moisture condense on the camera that can ruin the electronics inside.

The way to do that is to be very careful going from cold to warm (inside). Put the camera in a plastic bag before you come in and then don't open it up until the camera has equalized at the inside temperature.

If you have the camera protected, it will be fine. The camera is actually tougher than you are.

I shoot quite a lot of skiing / snowboarding with my 1D and mostly the 100-400 as well as the 17-40.

As said before take spare batts, and otherwise make sure to transport your gear safely...I usually take my LowePro Computrekker, take all the dividers out and put in 2-4 sweaters and wrap my equipment in them.....not sure whether that's actually smart :) but it doesn't get cold that fast and I'd think also can take more force if you should fall.

The ST65 is the NB-2LH equivalent replacement. Just go to this link (external link).

The problem is going from cold to warm not the other way around. If you put a warm can of pop in the refrigerator there is no condensation. If you take that cold can out of the refrigerator into a warm humid place, there is condensation. If the camera is below the dewpoint temperature, water will condense out of the air on it and in it.

If you put the camera in the bag and seal it before you come in, then there is no condensation because the cold air holds no moisture and the warm moist air can't get to the camera if it is sealed.

You need to use the zip locks going from hot to cold environments and cold to hot. Either way you can get condensation on the lens and the body of the lens. In extreme cases it can take up to 15 minutes to clear up. Especially in humid environments. I experience it all the time here in Louisiana, especially when I am offshore. I always keep several of the silica moisture absorbent packs in my camera bags next to my lenses. My 100-400 L gets wet quite often on the outside of the barrel. Actually have to dry it off. Often have to clean the lens with a liquid lens cleaner due to moisture patterns (esp. when using a rocket blower to clear it quicker) left behind after the fog clears.
