Do you have a budget or are you just lookig for any camera that will cover most of your "wants" regardless of cost?

Price range would help us help you, but a good upgrade to a xti would be a 40D 6.5FPS is about as fast as you are going to get for under 4k.

Most of your wants (except frames per second, assuming that's what you mean by "very fast camera") will be better addressed by upgrading your lenses. The XTi is more than capable of rendering great color, sharpness, and quality, but it is limited to 3 frames per second. Color, sharpness, and quality won't really be upgraded much (if at all) by upgrading your camera body, but the right lens(es) can make all the difference in the world for these.

The sharpnes part is more a lens issue but I would go with the 40d. I did an upgrade from 30d to 40d and I like every bit of the news in it. The only thing I find strange and I wish I found a thread about this before is the PURPLISH LCD issue???

When you refer to 6fps for the 40D how does that frame per seconds applies to the camera?

The 40D can take 6 picture / frame per second?

The money is best spent on a good lens or two. You've got plenty of megapixels. There is lots of room for growth in that Rebel if you're just getting started. Technique/post processing practice, and lenses will do much more for your photos. The camera's role isn't huge.

If you want sharp images that can be enlarged to this extent, you really need a high quality lens more than a camera. More megapixels with a lesser quality lens just means you get higher resolution soft images. Take a look at reviews of various lenses at Popular Photography's (popphoto.com) website -- they rate lens sharpness according to the size of the print you want. You'll see that the lens makes all the difference.
