I just picked up a new 40D and I took a couple of pictures and they started numbering in the 700's. Is this normal for Canon or do you think that this camera was used and then returned?

Thanks in advance.

Did you use a new or formatted CF card?

A previously formatted card will make the camera pick up where the card left off. Hence high numbers on a new camera

Your 40D picked up the file numbering from the camera that you previously used the card with and therefore the images started at the higher number.

so if you formatted the card it will start off with whatever number was last used on a previous camera? interesting.

The only way to avoid picking up previous numbering is to format the card in your PC first. It will then use the numbering from the camera.

If you want to go back to zero you could always do a counter reset.

Mine started with about 99xx shots, due to the CF previously used in my 350D. Then i immediately got the question from friends how did i managed to take so many shots whyle unsing the camera for about two days :-)
But there is something i don't understand/know. Today i was browsing in the EXIF data in files made with the 40D. The EXIF data field called 'orientation' is blank in here.
orientation (external link)
As far as i know pics taken with the 350D had a 'upper left' in this field in the EXIF.
I'm not an expert so this might be a stupid question, but why this field could be blank?

Paul, no need for that. You can format it in the new camera it goes into if you do it before taking any shots. And also, if you use the card in a different model, the whole numbering format is different, like I did recently. Went from a 30D to a D30, to a 1D. All different numbering and naming conventions and it did not carry over from one to the next, and I forgot to format it first. LOL

Interesting, that has not been my experience moving amongst the 20D, 400D and 40D.

Just tell them the 6.5fps is really paying off. Awesome buffer. :D

Formatting is formatting. There should be no difference between doing it on a PC or in the camera.
