Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum as you can tell, and I'm also new to DSLR's as I've just received my first one today.

As it turns out, my father has a 10D as well and to our surprise, on M Mode my camera will auto-focus on any subject in sight, yet on his, with presumably the same settings and the same lens he will have to manually focus.

Of course I've checked the AF/M setting on the lens and that's not the issue so it has to be something internal with the camera.

Alas I'm kinda lazy and haven't gotten around to read the manual yet (I assure you I will!) but I'm wondering off hand if anyone knows what's stopping my Dad's camera from operating in the same way as mine.

Let me know what you think...
Thanks.

FWIW I'm using a Canon EF 28-195.

M mode shouldn't have anything to do with focusing. You're saying it auto focuses in Av or Tv mode but not M?

My camera will auto focus on M mode, yet on my father's one it won't auto focus on M mode.

But does it AF in other modes?

Mine will AF in any mode...

His will only AF in the 'basic' modes. So there's no AF on P, Tv, Av and M.

oreca,
Welcome to the forum :)
My 10D will AF when the camera is set in M as long as the lens is set on AF (all my cameras AF in M). :)
Does your father have the problem with other lenses? ???
Its also possible your father has the custom setting Cfn-04 which makes AF on the * button

That does not make any sense to me. Maybe someone else has an idea. And welcome to the board.

I've never used a 10D, but on these cameras you need a fair amount of contrast in order to achieve auto focus. In low light situations (or with solid color subjects) the camera may not autofocus.

You didn't say -- were you and your father together, shooting the same subjects when this discrepancy happened?

Sometimes I with my 30D have to hunt a bit for a good focus point -- a cloud edge, for instance, or some other point with relatively higher contrast.

Hope this helps,

Tony

Thanks, and thanks again, it was the custom setting thing. He's surely a happy camper now :D
