On Canons web site they claim that the 40D has a 75 .jpg burst rate.

Mine will only go up to 6. Why is this?

Turn off high ISO noise reduction.

The website is saying it'll shoot 75 frames before filling the buffer to the point where you must wait for it to clear. That's the buffer depth, not the burst rate. The 6 you're referring to is the Frames Per Second burst rate...the speed at which the shutter and mirror can go through a full cycle. Two completely different specifications.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Why would that matter?

Because the high ISO noise reduction takes a while to perform, which means files stay in the buffer longer. So instead of files quickly being moved to the memory card freeing up space for more files, they clog up the buffer while they're being processed.

What the camera can not decipher between high ISO and low? That makes sense when you are on high ISO, but ISO 100??? common!

Page 156 of the manual:
"Reduces the noise generated in the image. Although noise reduction is applied at all ISO speeds, it is particularly effective at high ISO speeds. At low ISO speeds, the noise in the shadow areas is further reduced."
"! With setting 1, the maximum burst for continuous shooting will greatly decrease."

That's just how it is, man. Don't shoot the messenger.

This is a feature that you can turn off. Once you do, your buffer should increase.
