Personally, if I was in this situation (shooting a film K2) and my significant other gave me a 30D and 17-85, I would be grateful to them. I'd appreciate what I'm given. Someone's giving you a valuable gift that they worked hard to get and we would whine that they did not get us the better model? Why not ask for a 5D and 24-105 at the same time?
Then again I guess my values are just different..
No it's just really tacky to give someone your cast-off as a gift, then upgrade for yourself. Oh here sweetie, I got something better, here, you can have this older one, I'm not using it anymore. Now if you just wanted to upgrade, then give the old camera to her, that's wholly different, it's using it as a big gift that makes it troublesome.
