I put a smile next to my post but let me clarify. If you buy anything, buy the 40D, and in the end you KNOW you will end up using it too...maybe even more than her. Then when the new 5D or whatever comes out, you will be in a prime spot to ditch the 30D, and upgrade to the FF if you so choose.
This of course will hold true unless she leaves you for a man with a better camera!

Are you positive that she wants a DSLR, if she is just beginning maybe a G7 or G9 would work for her. Especially since they are a lot easier to carry around. It can lead to many more opportunities to take pictures of every day things which can lead to a faster learning curve since she would have a camera with her more often. My wife loves hers, takes it with her everywhere. Gets shots of the kids and all kinds of events that she wouldn't get other wise. Just a thought. They don't always want what we want or what we want them to have.

If she definitely wants the DSLR....40D!

She definitely wants a DSLR. I could tell she was pretty jealous when I got my 30D. She even says that she wants my camera really bad. But as someone mentioned before it would be better if I did not get another 30D and had a 40D around. And I DO LOVE HER so I definitely want her to have the best. 40D it is......thanks everyone.... sorry wallet lol

40D and next year the 24-70L. That should keep you guys together for a while.

OMG! And he thought he got lucky when he gave me the 50mm f1.4 USM and right angle view finder for my birthday! LOL

At least yours is going to school for this sort of thing and you know she's interested. I bought my hubby a gently used (he doesn't mind if it's well taken care of) 35mm Rebel G, because it would take the glass I already had. I wasn't sure he'd even use it, so why spend lots of money on a new camera? He was afraid to touch mine - I think he thought he'd break it. Since I gave it to him, he's spent much more than I ever thought he would on film and processing. Yeah...I can see him deciding to "borrow" mine before too long.

Rebel XTi, 18-55mm kit, Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM, Tamron 70-300/f4-5.6, Canon 55-250/f4-5.6 IS

Looking for tips, comments, critique, and in general help! :D

Yeah you'd be crazy to give her the 30D as a gift, and give yourself the newer toy. She'd be really upset, I know I'd be and I'm not even female. You'd be in the doghouse for months.

Personally, if I was in this situation (shooting a film K2) and my significant other gave me a 30D and 17-85, I would be grateful to them. I'd appreciate what I'm given. Someone's giving you a valuable gift that they worked hard to get and we would whine that they did not get us the better model? Why not ask for a 5D and 24-105 at the same time?

Then again I guess my values are just different..

No it's just really tacky to give someone your cast-off as a gift, then upgrade for yourself. Oh here sweetie, I got something better, here, you can have this older one, I'm not using it anymore. Now if you just wanted to upgrade, then give the old camera to her, that's wholly different, it's using it as a big gift that makes it troublesome.
