ahhh send it to canon! you shouldn't have to take out batteries, drain them, replace them.... or other nonsenese... We are not talking about a P&S camera here.

Love this forum, even though I shoot with dark side. :D

Bad news Rob. I think that with the focussing issue as well I'd push your supplier for an exchange. I hung onto mine because i'm happy with its focussing but i think its time you got a new one.

This is only a stab in the dark, but it worked for me, so there is no harm in trying the same.

Remove the battery and back-up battery from your camera.
Now switch the camera to 'on' and depress the shutter button a few times. Yes, I know nothing is happening...well not superficially, but what you are doing is discharging (dumping)
the circuit capacitors, i.e. draining any stored current within the circuits. Leave the camera switched on, go and have a coffee.

Now switch the camera button to off. Replace the back up battery
(with a new one if available, if not use the old battery). Now fit
the main battery and switch on..

This worked for me and the problem has not returned (touch wood!)

I cannot give you any scientific explanation other than what I've mentioned but I can wish you all the best of luck and hope it
does the trick. Please let's know how you went on.

Martin

tried all that yet nothing but erro 99 and tried diffrent lenses too .
Rob.

So sorry to hear about this, I feel your pain, though not to the tune of $4K. At the end of the day, in spite of how much we love Canon, we have to remember that these cameras are made in factories, they go down assembly lines and, unfortunately, sometimes the factory turns out some bad copies. I have had to re-realize this with my 40D experience.

I sure hope you can get it fixed soon.

Please keep us posted.

Best,

Michael

Error 99 is the catch all error for canon. ie: If no other specific error fits, you get this one. Usually it is due to a lens/body interface issue at the contacts, but it can also show up with shutter issues and many other problems.

you said you took out the batteries, but ever remove the memory cards? i've seen more er99 caused by cards than hardware failure....

also, if you really want to be sure of everything, take out the batteries, cards, lens, wait, replace memory battery (disk one), and use the wall adaptor. turn on the camera and see if the error is there. take a photo if it isn't err99'ed up. if it still works, turn it off and put in the battery. if you repeat the steps and still works, battery's fine. repeat with memory card, and then lens. this is what troubleshooting is all about...

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Yes i did take the card out and tried 2 diffrent ones .
To be honest its up to Canon to troubleshoot before they sell there cameras when im out in the field (and i mean in the field ) i really would not mind just poping the battery out and putting it back in again if that cleared the erro but there would be no way of using the wall adaptor so haveing tried a few things and being lucky enough to have other cameras they can have it back and have another go at the AF problem too.
Although im not at all happy about the problems My camera has i feel more sorry for the guy's that had to sell there working camera's to help pay towards this one and maybe your ider ( sounds a good test ) can help them .
im reaching the point were i want a new one or my money back and perhapes try the 40d or even see how the Nikon's fair .
Rob.

Rob,
Sorry things have not worked out for you. Get it back to Canon
seems now the only option. It's sad a customer has to have all this messing about with a new camera. For the record, what are the first three numbers of your camera's serial number? For instance, mine are 527xxx. Is yours earlier of later?
