When I posted my shot I thought that I had set it to the correct dimensions and file size, seems I didn't and an error on my behalf but not intentional. My image was within the dimensions but not file size, which was 118kb.

Monty, I'll put it in your ball court, so if you want to re-judge the photos thats up to you, and whatever is decided I won't have a problem with it. I speak for myself here and doubleo6point9 and RX350 may have different views to this.

At the end of the day I thought it was a fun comp, but rules are rules, and I will make it clearer in comp #28 that the size and dimensions rule must be adhered to, and if Monty does wish to change the winners I will remove comp #28.

Rob

Personally I did the same thing. I set the the width limit to 800 pixels but I saved it as a "10" in jpg quality and left it at that. Didn't really think about the 100k size limit. Either way, this was my first comp and I did this just for fun. So if Monty wants to re-judge the photos then I'm perfectly fine with this as well.

Regardless, congrats to everyone else who posted an entry in this speed challenge!

I agree 100%. The limit is set to POTN requirements. File size is limited to 100kB to store the image on the POTN server. Hosting the image myself should not require this limit.

The 800 pixel limit should be more enforced as POTN does not allow any images to be embedded that are greater than 800 pixels. But it should be 800 pixels, and not less, to allow for the best judging.

Back to the contest. I am glad I didn't have to judge this week's competition. The images are outstanding! Congrats to the winners.

I think it is absolutely fine as well to host images @ above 100K, so perhaps the text of the rules can be changed(?)

With my picture I think I lost a lot of finer detail by saving to such a small compressed size (not that it fitted the 'water' theme too well anyway :) )

It was nice to see all these lovely photos around the same theme..... muito bon..

Rob you got it!! And congrats everyone on a wonderful set of entries...

It doesn't seem that the dimensions and size requirements have been enforced since I started entering these contests in July so I'm not going to change that now.

Good decision Monty... And I suggest to Rob that he drop the file size requirement and just stick to the "800 max on the long side" pixel requirement. If you are attaching an image you won't be able to exceed 100KB anyhow. And, as Athena stated, if you're hosting your own image and it's no bigger that 800 pixels, it shouldn't matter, and the image quality certainly won't be that much different. I don't think anyone would have an unfair advantage based on file size alone.

If anyone cares to go back to the original Speed Challenge posted by august23, his rules were entirely different...

"3. Size -- Photo must be EXACTLY 800 pixels on the longest side and no more than 200K in size with NO BORDERS. Here is some help for resizing your photos in Photoshop - https://photography-on-the.net/forum/...9&postcount=26"

Every one has copied and pasted the rules for their own challenges and has made changes along the way. The 200K rule somehow chaged to 100K at Challenge #21 or #22. The only constant rule being the 800 pixel requirement. From day one the contest has been judged fairly loosely, in the SPIRIT of creativity more than hard and fast rules. Hell...we have even tolerated some P&S pictures even though this is a DSLR contest. The bottom line is that these contests are just for FUN!There is no monetary compensation, just bragging rights.

About the only infraction that shouldn't be tolerated is posting someone else's image and passing it off as one's own!

I think that the 800 size is good. I think 200k is also good. But with these contests, many pictures get posted. For someone with Dial up, a whole page of 1 MB (for example) images would pretty much eliminate them from participating.

I'll second Ed -- the original rule seems much more realistic as well. But above all let's keep this FUN.

yea... does seem more realistic that way... I conformed and I will conform with further ones.... I think the file size is important too for users that don't have high speed connections... nobody likes slow loading pages so 200k is reasonable. I myself do and I don't know anyone who doesn't, but cable modems have been a common thing where I'm from for about 6 or 7 years... I'm sure they aren't everywhere though... especially with people doing photography with dSLRs.

Not being a moderator I don't know whether I can just change the file size allowed without putting the question to CyberDyneSystems the forum Mod or Pekka. I'll let everyone know what i find out when I get a message off to them later today, as work is calling and I'm running late :(

Lets not lose the FUN side to these comps everyone, and it would be great to see some firework pictures up on the new comp

Hi guys,

We are looking at two separate issues, and I am not in position to rule on half of this.

This I can offer.
POTN Attachment restrictions are set at and remain at 100KB.

However the further discussion of the competition rules are not my bailiwick at all.

ie: this competition is totally member driven, and the rules are your own.
It appears to me that some of the previous competitions clearly state a 100KB limit that should have been adhered to, where as Ed points out some had 200k limit.

Obviously the reason for the 100k rule was to maintain an even playing field for all involved.
What you all need to decide is whether it is more important to maintain that even playing field, Vs. being flexible and allowing the advantage to those that take advantage.
Whether to allow loopholes with your own file hosting, making it a "known advantage" that members can chose to take advantage of or not is entirely up to you all, but it may alienate newer members looking to join in that will be relying on the attachment limit.

You may want to consider the historical aspects of other competitions on the forum.
All of them have specified image size. (dimensions)
Allowing this to be liquid IMHO would be counterproductive.

woot! for the winners. I knew I didn't have a chance!!

Thanks for the rule clarification, Jake. I'm of the opinion that the 100kb rule came about as a misunderstanding of the POTN posting rules (many people seem to be confused about the difference between attached and hosted images).
