What's this about a "recall" service? Are there problems with this particular lens?

You have to navigate through from this page https://self-service.canon-europe.com/uk/pages/ (external link) but the gist of it is copied form the relevent page:-

"We recently informed you of a phenomenon in which some images captured by the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens appear in insufficient resolution. This phenomenon may be seen at the edge of the frame at the 300mm setting when the camera is held vertically.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience that this phenomenon has caused for customers who use this lens and appreciate your understanding and cooperation. We have now determined the cause and have developed the remedy. Affected Products:
This phenomenon affects all EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM lenses with a “0” or “1” in the third digit of the (8 digit) serial number. Products that have a third digit of “2” or higher in their serial number are not affected. "

The issue in my case (and others have reported the same) also manifests itself in that at anything over 100mm usage in portrait orientation is useless and the zoom action is so loose that holding the lens vertically causes it drop & zoom under its own weight. It is my understanding that they replace the whole inner barrel to "repair" it.

:)

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Thanks for the info and the link to Canon. The problem will have been ironed out by the time I get round to ordering?

Maybe this is what 7 Day Shop is referring to when they say 'the problem with this lens has been sorted'.
