i thought there would be a setting where i could choose this, but i cant figure it out...

thanks

btw, i did a search, the only advice that i got was to shoot in color and work with black and white with an image editor. but i am just curious how i set it up to just take pics in black and white mode from the camera.

Well if you have to shoot in BW mode, go into picture styles and select monochrome. then if you go back into picture styles and click monochrome again you can select different color filters as well as things like sephia etc

What camera?

Each different model is a little bit different to configure....

On the XTi/400D, select the Monochrome picture style. Page 64 of the XTi/400D manual. See also page 80 for the adjustments that you can make.

its better to just convert to Black and white in PP. that way you have more control over the tones and filters

Be aware too that the B+W mode only affects jpeg files. If you shoot RAW or RAW+jpeg, the RAW files will still be in colour and if you want them in B+W, you can only do this in post-processing.

^I found that one out on my own. It helped me though know whether I liked the shot in B&W.

There are many free softwares that will help you produce great B&W in Post Processing. If you shoot B&W, in camera, you are stuck with B&W. No putting color back in later. Shoot color.
