Asking prices here & at FM have been dropping. Average price is just under $2000. I have seen below $1800 recently.

I thought UK is running some Canon rebates at the moment? With the prices dropping, might be better off pick up a new one :)

The ones we're seeing in canada are if you buy 2 things on the list (camera/Lens, camera/printer etc) you get a rebate on both.

If you buy just one item you get a lesser rebate on it.

I would probably pay no more than 80% of the new price ($2295) which is around $1800.00. I would make sure the camera was not refurbished and comes with the original box, warranty card, software, battery, strap, and all the other goodies that a retail boxed 5D come with new. Inquire about dust in the view finder or on the sensor. A few dust specs is normal on the 5D, but a bunch is a good sign to stay away unless you want to pay Canon for cleaning and adjustment. Good luck in your search.

The current rebate system in the UK is that you get a cashback voucher with the camera, which you send to Canon and they send you the money. It's currently £135 on the 5D I believe.

This means that if you buy a new 5D for £1435 (the current price at Warehouse Express), you get £135 back from the voucher, so the camera costs you £1300.

If you can't make a really good saving on a used 5D, I would recommend buying a new one. You get a full warranty and you are reasonably sure of it's history. If the used one you get has been mistreated it could fail a couple of months down the line with no comeback, resulting in (potentially) a very big bill.

To give an example: I have used my 5D in the rain on several occasions, this hasn't caused any problems to date. However, as the 5D is not classed as weather resistant, it may have got sufficient moisture inside it to start corroding the circuits (a known issue with un-proofed cameras).

I have no way of knowing if it has an impending failure because of this, and neither would you as a buyer (particularly if you were told that the camera had never been wet). My camera could fail in the future (next week, month, year, whatever) and be sent for repair, resulting in a quote for several hundred pounds for new internals.

Don't feel that any warranty you get with it will cover it either, water damage is specifically excluded.

I let mine get wet, knowing the risks and that they are all mine (I won't be selling it), however an unscrupulous seller may have got theirs wet and decided to sell it to avoid dealing with the problem of a failure themselves.

thanks for the replies the rebate now makes sense, but why do they not just discount it at the shop you buy it from??? there is no way i can justify over £1000 for another camera so will keep my eyes open for a bargain and take a risk, unless the price comes down when (if) they bring a mrk2 out

I picked up a second hand 5D with Grip for £1000 at the weekend. Went into my local shop to buy a 40D and they'd just had a 5D in part-exchange. Good condition, with 6 months warranty from the shop.
Oh, and the leap from 300D to 5D is very noticable!
