looking at it again now, there is a lot of dead space on the right. it could do with a tighter crop. i'll give it another go.

Nice catch. For some reason focus on the dirt is bothering me. My eyes keep going back and forth between his helmet and the dirt hill.

The subject is the expression on his face and what's about to happen; recc. tighter crop from face-to-top-of-dirt.

Is the subject sharp?

I have this problem every time I photograph my nephews BMX meets...hard to capture all the things going on..... Lighting usually is horrid.....either harsh or wet.

I just played....but I have a very similar shot of a rider on the track, hard to know where to end the crop?
( the ground I did is too bright)

you're a great friend, but if Zombies chase us, I am tripping you.

I really like the tighter crop of the original though I think you may be able to go even a little bit closer but not too much - making it square knocks off some of the sense of height...

I like the finish of Gail's crop, and it's sharpened the focus up more than #1 or #2 but my preference is #2 for the height that it retains - the whole purpose is to illustrate the height of the rider, which is somewhat lost in #3. #3 also goes back to dirt focus because it is brighter than the original.

So the problem is that of focus - is there some way of doing a mild bokeh on the lower part of the picture to remove so much attention to that? Or brightening the upper portion of the shot? Not sure what options there are in PS.

That's my 2 Robert's worth..

one more try. a happy medium? cropped a touch more off the bottom, desaturated and burnt the dirt of the jump a bit so it doesn't stand out so much, and then lightened and sharpened the rider a touch.
