Got my "new" used Sigma today in the mail. The original buyer had apparently bought it off of Cameta/Ebay in June 2008(original receipt). Looks like Cameta has been shipping the new center pinch cap since atleast June. My first "real" lens. Off to some shooting.

My Sigma 24-60mm front focusses. On one hand I feel Sigma should really fix their QC issues, on the other hand i feel for the price i paid the hassle of warranty trip is worth it.

Has anyone also owned Canon 28-105 II USM f3.5-4.5? How does the Sigma compare to it in terms of "sharpness" and color reproduction?

On the surface both are similiarly prices with the advantage to Sigma for f2.8 and the advantage to Canon for name and probably focussing.

I believe that the Sigma is optically superior to that Canon lens.
What method are you using to check focusing? Can you post a typical shot that you are getting?

My Sigma focuses great. The "EX" build quality is near that of "L" Canon lenses (better than the Canon 28-105). They are very sharp even at f/2.8 (as long as you have a good copy like I got) with awsome IQ. The Canon 28-105 USM would be a nice lens for a full-frame camera to have lots of range and for outdoor use.

Finally got mine back from the camera repair center (After 2 month-ish?) and there's still a slight front focus issue . . . bah.

Got it today from Cameta. Focus at 24mm and 60mm seems spot on. Overall pretty sharp, sharpest from f5.6-11/16. But I wouldn't hesitate to shoot this lens even at f22. Bokeh is nice. Having owned two Tamron 28-75mm lenses, it may be a touch sharper but overall, considering that this is wider, and more than 1/3 cheaper, I'd go for the sigma again.

Here is a quick review/test shots with the Sigma, I'm loading it up now.

Unsual that it took so long. That's unfortunate. The next step would be to send the lens and camera in together so they can create a custom focus profile. Contacting them through customer service may expidite matters.

Did it go to sigma themselves or a third party place?

Evidently it took that long because they ran out of "parts" (the CS rep did not specify what kind of part or what for) to calibrate my lens so they had to order the parts and await for their arrival. I called on four separate occasions to receive status updates, but not in a rude or forceful way or anything like that - just to inquire.
JackProton, thanks I may do that after the holidays when I don't need my camera and lens as much.
-spam- it went to an authorized Sigma service center. I looked up the address and it's on their website;
Camera Repair Japan
3435 Breckinridge Blvd, Suite 130
Duluth, GA 30096

Repair centers like that are basically independent shops that have some sort of relationship with Sigma. I don't know what kind of requirements such shops have to meet. They might do quality work but then again, they might not.

And given that uncertainty, I'd rather send it to Sigma itself, at their New York address.

Does one have the choice to send to the actual Sigma service center? I am pretty sure I called the Sigma number and they asked me to send to the Duluth center based on my proximity to it. Of course I probably just called the wrong number . . . lesson learned!

You might have called the right number, and it may be that they were just trying to be as helpful as possible.

I'm on the west coast, and when I inquired about sending my lens in I asked explicitly whether or not I could send it to their New York site. They were fine with that, so I think it's really just a matter of your own preferences.

I did the same though the person I talked to suggested the NY Service Center was the best choice even though I'm hundreds of miles from it.
