Let's raise the stakes a little bit: Canon 30D vs Rebel XTi (400d)? I currently have a 40D as my main body and was thinking of a good backup body. Should I go XTi or 30D?

XTi, why? well I personally think a backup should be fairly small & lightweight, its also better spec over the ageing 30D.

Biggest diff between the xt and my10D for me is the viewfinder...the latter being larger and brighter...easier to see through in low light esp. for manual focusing...

Only in terms of megapixel count. If you do a side-by-side comparison of the XTi and 30D specs I don't think the XTi wins in any way except for megapixel count, dust-cleaning system, and less weight if that's your thing. And definitely not if high ISO noise matters. The XTi is roughly a stop noisier than the 30D according to reviews I've seen such as this one (external link) (a 40D review, but scroll down to the comparison photos against the 30D, XTi, and 1D Mark III), and it wisely doesn't even attempt ISO 3200 like the 30D does. It would have to be a 30D for me.

And the XT is of the same generation, and also has no means to confirm shutter count. Neither camera should be discounted over the other on account of its age.

Not so--It is current manufactured and available new in box with warranty for a little over $400 body only.

Middle age is when you can finally afford the things that a young man could truly enjoy.

Remember we are only talking about a backup body here, depends of course how much you use a backup, for me I have the 5D with a 350D as backup, it adds virtually no weight to the bag, however I very VERY rarely use the backup.
