I've read the manual till I'm blue in the face, and have only halfway succeeded in using the AE lock button to achieve focus. I can't seem to get the right combination of custom functions to stop the shutter button from focusing.

Using One Shot Mode.

When I press the AE lock button the camera does focus. However, if I first simply depress the shutter button halfway (without touching the AE lock button), the camera will focus as well.

So, I have two points on the camera that focus, the AE lock button, and the shutter button.

The other problem is that if I achieve focus with the AE lock button, then recompose, pressing the shutter button causes a new focus to occur.

What settings will enable me to stop the shutter button from focusing at all?

Thanks.

im pretty sure there is a custom function that will set the shutter to AE Lock and the * button to focus lock.

there is at least on the rebel XTi.

on the rebel its c.fn 04 set to 1 instead of 0. maybe its the same on the MKIII

You're right, but I'm having a heck of a time getting the right combination.

Answered my own question.

"M" stands for manual. In my case "M" stands for moron.

In Av/Tv mode things work like I set them. AE Lock button focuses, and shutter button locks exposure.

For whatever reason (call it advancing age) I expected the same behavior in manual mode.:o

It's way past my bedtime.

i'm going to guess that you just don't realize the importance of M when the conditions call for it:rolleyes:

as for cf.n, what you want is c.fnIV 1-3 and cfn IV 2-1

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Do what?

My shutter button never has anything to do with focusing regardless of what shooting mode im in...Av,Tv,M...It doesnt matter. I dont have the camera in front of me, but I just set the shutter button to either Meter+AElock or just Meter depending on what Im doing. The AF-on button controls focusing.

I shoot in Manual 98% of the time. Just was having a mental block.

Thanks for the cf.n settings. It was confirmation of the settings I have set.

At this point I'm not sure, but I think when I first experienced the "problem" I may have been in AI servo mode.
