300D problem: Won't turn on! Anyone else?

Hi,

My 300D literally died today - it simply won't turn on! The battery is fine, even tested with a new battery, but no power from the camera at all. It's only two years old and has been working perfectly to date.

I thought I'd try some troubleshooting before sending it in for presumably costly repair. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions?

Is there a separate memory battery like the 20D has? The one in the 20D is a disc-shaped battery. Its purpose is to maintain the setup memory, time, etc.

I hadn't thought to look before, but yes, it has a disc battery.

I only just remembered it was there with SkipD's suggestion. I've taken both batteries out, following advice I just got from another forum, but also discovered that a blown fuse is common with this model too! I had expected to get a bit more life out of a $1500 camera, but apparently 3 years makes it not repair-worthy. Crazy!

Fuse? Didn't know my 300D had a fuse. Do you have any more details?

With the fuse blown, everything is dead. Some people have linked across the pads next to the fuse to make the camera usable again (its a tiny surface mount fuse). However you can solder wires onto these pads, lead them just outside the metal cover for this pcb and solder another miniature fuse on (covering it with heatshrink to avoid shorts). I measured the current draw at 100-150 mA, and used a 250 mA fuse. This has worked fine with a variety of lenses. I have further details (where to get the fuses etc) if anyone else is in the same boat.
