I got a chance to play with a 40D the other day at my dealer's shop and it is super fast!!! Focusing (EF 17-85 f4-5.6 attached) definitely felt faster than my 30D with 24-70.

I tried the burst mode using my (half full) 2GB Ultra II CF card. In JPEG/Normal mode (yes, I'm a cheapskate, I dont use 'Fine' for any of my shooting) I could get well over 200 full res shots and the thing just kept on going.

Anyone got more precise numbers on the write speed of the 40D ala Rob Galbraith? I'm thinking to start buying some Extreme III's if the 40D can write much faster so I can take advantage of them when I upgrade to the 40D

I didn’t get much chance to play with my 40D, so I don’t have the numbers, but I’ve definitely noticed that Ultra II cards are too slow for 6.5fps RAW burst!
Time to go for Extreme III, at least..

6.5FPS with 75 frame buffer...

The only thing the Ultra 3 will help with is clearing the buffer's memory, not taking the original photos. The ultra 3 real advantage is sub-zero temps.

Ah yes, And I thought it was just me. RAW buffer flush felt sluggish (ala 30D kinda speed I'm used too - I expected faster). So who's at fault - camera 40D or CF Ultra II?

I am really surprised that DPReview still didn’t come up with in-depth review of 40D!
There are couple of things I’d like to know in details, and they are pretty systematic..

I have read a review testing the 40D, that the 40D can shoot JPG's with the right card and certain CF settings disabled, with out filling the buffer up, and tester gave up after continuously shooting like nr 300 shots,,,, cannot find that review now, but it was one that was floating about when all the 40D hype was about

it does more on all accounts than what the Canon White paper says

But that's exactly what I need..
If camera clears buffer slowly, new shots cannot be taken and burst is slowed down..

with a Lexar Professional 8GB 133x speed I took close to 120 images before I finally just stopped because it was not slowing down lol But with noise reduction on you will get around 7 to 10 pictures before it slows down and stops pretty much.
