I just received my new 40D yesterday and what a amazing camera.

When I was using the Live view feature I noticed that I could not auto focus . Do I need to auto focuse first throug the view finder then enable the live view?

Press and hold the AF-On button the back. You will hear a beep when it has focused.

While Live view is originally aimed towards macro photography and Manual focusing, Auto focusing is still possible with 40D.

When you fully press the shutter button for the first time, mirror temporarily swings down, enabling auto focusing and locking.
With the second press of the shutter, mirror goes up and shot is taken.

You sure about that? I have to do it with the AF-On button.

Yes, that’s what I meant, sorry if it’s not clear: Auto focus with AF-ON button - rather than Manually focusing the lens..

Edit: Actually, I screwed up everything! :o

So instead of holding the shutter button down half way for the autofocus to work. I would have to hold down the AF-on to enable the auto focus?

Yes, exactly.

Press Set button (in the middle of Quick Dial) to enter Live View mode.
Mirror goes up.
Press Af-ON button: mirror goes down, auto focusing and focus locking is performed.
Press shutter button to take a shot.
Press Set button again to exit Live View.

There is a custom function that has to be enabled for autofocus to work in live view. The default setting is set to disabled, you need to change that first before the autofocus button will flip down the mirror and focus.

I need to enable some setting in the menu first before I can use this auto focus by pushing the AF button?

I'll give this a try when I get home. Thank you for your help.
